G9 - Dust problem???

Hi All
1st post so bear with me. My Canon Ixus 800IS just died on me with the dreaded Lens Error, which I have since read about on the internet and as such I am in the market for a new Camera.
Whilst I don't yet wish a DSLR, I thought the G9 offered a good bridge between the two. Having read various website reviews which all sound very positive I was all set to buy one when I stumbled on a customer review comment on www.amazon.co.uk who slated it saying that it was a sealed unit and dust gets sucked into the lense and sensor areas by the lense opening and closing.
I have read several other comments on this and I am getting slightly worried as they state that you cannot but its design clean it easily/cheaply.
Is this a wide spread issue or am I just getting paranoid.
I essentially want a very good compact which offers the ideal blend of strong optical zoom and image quality.

Hi, and welcome.
I haven't heard of any specific problems regarding the G9. I have one myself and haven't got that problem.
You should bear in mind that ALL cameras with a zoom lens will suck air into the camera as the lens enlarges. The space inside the camera gets bigger and it's not a vacuum in there.

I'd be a bit suspicious about any comment from someone who apparently can't grasp the meaning of 'sealed unit' (and can't spell lens either)...
I've had a Pansonic compact for about a year now, it's had a lot of use and I have seen no dust issues despite all the turning on/off and zooming/focusing movements.
Frankly I doubt the G9 is any poorer in this respect. It sounds like the usual internet claptrap generated by one disgruntled user who's had a faulty camera and therefore decides on the basis on his one experience that every G9 is duff. Hardly a statistically or logically valid position...
My advice is to ignore it...

I've got dust in the lens of my Casio compact....just give it a short, sharp whack to rearrange the dust until it doesn't show in the pics! Different bits of dust seem to come and go.
If you really don't want dust I'd look at a compact with an internal zoom. IIRC the Sony T series has them but don't know what else does.

Go buy the G9. I've not had a problem. Then again, I take such crap photos that a bit of dust would not register.

I've never had a problem with dust on my G9, it lives in my bag gets a fair bit of use and goes everywhere I do.

Having taken more than 1 compact digi apart, I can safely say that Canon fit dust seals around the differing barrels of the lens. This should keep the dust out (Canon are not the only manufacturer to do this btw). Could be that the dust id just flakes from the motor and gearing that work the lens optics for focus and zoom. As has been said above, a sharp tap on something semi-solid (such as your wrist) should dislodge anything significant.
Incidentally, the optics of some of the compact cameras are something of miniature miracles. I am in awe of the designers and process engineers who think out the way to assemble these things

My G9 lives in either my briefcase or the glovebox of the car - no dust problems.
