Which lens
|

I recently treated myself to a 450D.As well as the kit lens,I have a Sigma 70-300. What I would like to know is,which lens is recommended for low light level work.I have been asked to do a fair bit of pub work for various local musicians,and I am thinking along the lines of a 50mm prime. Any recommendations please. Thank you.

Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 or a Canon 28mm f/2.8 should do.

You can't really go wrong with the nifty fifty. Build quality is not the best but for the money you won't find a sharper lens.

I'm even half tempted to get one and I have 50mm covered already (in the shape of the Tamron 17-50mm)...but alas I have numerous things I want to spend my money on when I can get back in the black following the 70-200

I wish that people would stop this thing about 'build quality' of this lens, there's nothing wrong with the quality of the lens. Canon wouldn't have sold as many as they have if it had been otherwise. Before you start the proverbial about MkI versus MkII, they are of equal quality, even if the construction materials differ.
There are only a couple posts on here of damaged EF 50mm f/1.8 lenses and they have both been due to carelessness or accidents.

Mine broke when I dropped it, attached to an eos1n and it landed lens first  So I bought another.
You can't deny that it feels plasticy and cheap, and the lack of a proper AF ring is a bit of a pain. The plus side is its size and weight make for a really portable setup when attached to a smaller camera.

Well it is the only Canon lens I've ever had that fell apart in use...

Can't agree... The build quality of the lens is not confidence inspiring though it works well enough. Construction is nowhere near as solid as the 28mm I also have nor the equivalent 50mm AF-D Nikkor I recently purchased. On the other hand the price is so cheap that it's effectively a disposable item - if it breaks just chuck it away and buy a new one...
