Re: Apr08 comments “Close-up”

This orchid was photographed recently at the Royal Horticultural Gardens at Wisley. They have recently opened a new spectacular Glass House and there was an exhibition of orchids in the entrance foyer. I used the Pentax 100mm f2.8 lens on the K10D, 1/125th at f3.5, ISO 200 with the camera on a tripod.

Thats a nice image Richard, well composed and you have the entire insect in focus. I take it another one with the 100mm macro? Great fun these lenses.

Dave Cox, 'Corvette', is that your reflection in the bottom of the image?

Yeh, to get the straight on angle I had lean over slightly. I could have tried to clone it out, but I don't like makinmg too many adjustments. This has been cropped to the square format but not much else has been done.

You need to give these a go, you don’t need a macro to do good close up, some simple extension tubes will give you some great results…

A flatbed scanner can be a useful tool for getting 1:1 images of some things, but read the brief - it has a degree of latitude such that you don't need to have a macro lens to fulfil the competition requirements.

As usual in the wee small hours between putting little 'un to bed and me falling asleep I finally got a pic up for this month..

Used a 28-105 AF-D in macro mode fixed to my trusty D1x and tidied up a little in PS7 (colours as they are - just cropped and adjusted slightly).

As always, comments appreciated - though a mug would be nicer

I would have thought photographing bank notes would be frowned upon, even illegal as they can be copied and printed etc. Coins on the other hand may be OK as you can't really give someone an ink jet picture of a 20p piece and pass it off as real.. Just my opinion - I did a quick google about photographing money but it didn't come up with anything.

I gather that most scanners have software which tries to detect the sort of fine detail that exists on banknotes and "modifies" it. Doesn't warn the user that what (s)he is getting is not what (s)he saw, though ... and may possibly (i.e. will in certain circumstances) interfere with the reproduction of images which are not of bank notes.

Quote:

OTOH you can easily make a mould off a real coin and cast counterfeits... there are a lot of fake £1 coins in circulation, some estimates run as high as 20% of the number in circulation.
