Re: Apr08 comments “Close-up”

This orchid was photographed recently at the Royal Horticultural Gardens at Wisley. They have recently opened a new spectacular Glass House and there was an exhibition of orchids in the entrance foyer. I used the Pentax 100mm f2.8 lens on the K10D, 1/125th at f3.5, ISO 200 with the camera on a tripod.

Thats a nice image Richard, well composed and you have the entire insect in focus. I take it another one with the 100mm macro? Great fun these lenses.

Dave Cox, 'Corvette', is that your reflection in the bottom of the image?

Yeh, to get the straight on angle I had lean over slightly. I could have tried to clone it out, but I don't like makinmg too many adjustments. This has been cropped to the square format but not much else has been done.

Please don't say that...I agree that there are some great images posted so far, but that should spurn you on even more to have a go....something simple like a very close up angled shot of a cloths peg could clinch it....go on....give it a go...I know I will

You need to give these a go, you don’t need a macro to do good close up, some simple extension tubes will give you some great results…

A flatbed scanner can be a useful tool for getting 1:1 images of some things, but read the brief - it has a degree of latitude such that you don't need to have a macro lens to fulfil the competition requirements.

^WHS^ I don't have a macro lens but that won't stop me from posting an image. You only have to get closer, not macro.

Not a bad idea! Saying that though you should see the cuts and scars from just taking pictures. She really isn't a fan of the lens at all!

Finally done one..
|
|
As usual in the wee small hours between putting little 'un to bed and me falling asleep I finally got a pic up for this month..
Used a 28-105 AF-D in macro mode fixed to my trusty D1x and tidied up a little in PS7 (colours as they are - just cropped and adjusted slightly).
As always, comments appreciated - though a mug would be nicer
Must say there are some cracking pics again this month.

Re: Finally done one..

3studio has done a shot very like one I have done in the past. However after reviewing the copyright information regarding currency I have never published the picture as I believe reproducing money in any part is an infringement. Not wanting to get anyone in trouble, but worth a look I think.

3studio has done a shot very like one I have done in the past. However after reviewing the copyright information regarding currency I have never published the picture as I believe reproducing money in any part is an infringement. Not wanting to get anyone in trouble, but worth a look I think.
I think it relates to paper money, and only 1:1 real colour reproduction. But don't quote me.

I can't remember which magazine I saw it in, but a reviewer used a £10 note to test a new macro lens. He only shot small fragments of it though - you wouldn't be able to stick them together to make a dodgy tenner.

No, the sellotape would give it away anyway!

I would have thought photographing bank notes would be frowned upon, even illegal as they can be copied and printed etc. Coins on the other hand may be OK as you can't really give someone an ink jet picture of a 20p piece and pass it off as real.. Just my opinion - I did a quick google about photographing money but it didn't come up with anything.

I gather that most scanners have software which tries to detect the sort of fine detail that exists on banknotes and "modifies" it. Doesn't warn the user that what (s)he is getting is not what (s)he saw, though ... and may possibly (i.e. will in certain circumstances) interfere with the reproduction of images which are not of bank notes.

OTOH you can easily make a mould off a real coin and cast counterfeits... there are a lot of fake £1 coins in circulation, some estimates run as high as 20% of the number in circulation.

eek hi.
This is the first time I've posted a photograph where a critical eye will be cast over it.
I took this shot a couple of months ago as my tattoo was healing, using a very nice Samsung NV15.

Sorry David, it was only my opinion and I won't be judging the competition, it was only a comment and I didn't mean that you should change your entry.

Thanks Lewis. Cute's not usually a word associated with me, and it's funny that I see the shot as mischievous rather than cute, but then I know the model only too well.

I wondered where your entry was Tanya. Never mind - get shooting for the May competition!
I don't envy Damo - another really strong month.
