Quiraing
|
|
The reason I chose my entry was because it has a degree of abstraction which would have been impossible working in colour. The Quiraing are one of the most easily recognised features of Scotland's scenery, and the shot was taken from the exact same point hundreds or thousands of others have stood when taking their pictures.
Using the channel mixer with a predominantly green filter effect has resulted in an image which doesn't have the soot and chalk look popular in B/W landscapes, but also an image which isn't immediately recognisable. The abstraction only works in B/W, and the image can even be (at a glance) seen a Hokusai-esque wave crashing on cliffs. The scale has become lost in B/W, adding mystery.
That, for me, is the point of using black and white - abstraction, and the way it causes you to look at the details to find the 'truth.'

I don't care how you did it, it's lovely. Nice tonal gradations are far more popular than soot and chalk, with me at any rate...

Depends on the image. The Quiraing is suitable for just about any treatment IMHO!
It's actually the same approach I took for my February entry, FWIW. Gives a result a little reminiscent of SFX, which is no bad thing in my book.

Think you are being a little too defeatist, a little too early Fen!!! Although I admit it is a tremendous B&W landscape image... it doesn't necessarily mean that it will appeal to the judge as much as an equally competent portrait, action shot or still life image.
Having so many great images submitted so early only raises the challenge for me... but then again, I like a good challenge!!!

Easily recognised cruising the beaches dressed in an anorak and clutching a tartan Thermos close to his chest, pen and pad in the other hand and a scuffed telescope hanging on a string around his neck. The tricorn hat and eye-patch are mere affectations however.

The OED gives the definition: A painting executed in different shades of one colour, with representation of light and shade.
But it also says "Black and White" in the brief!
ConFUseD?
|
|
|
Re: Ruling please
|
|
The brief interchanges the terms "black and white" and "monochrome" so this is ambiguous to me. I was thinking of a toned image but decided it didn't fit the title "Using Black & White" so went for a greyscale image instead.
I would therefore not expect to be seeing toned images, but then I have been accused of pedancy on the odd occasion...
|
|
|
Re: Ruling please
|
|
There we go, ever so slightly (selenium) toned. Hardly noticeable.
I submitted this image as part of my AP/SPI people module and Scott (my tutor) liked it, so lets see if his AP colleagues have similar taste (or lack of)

Rather carelessly I have used two terms as though they are interchangeable. As such I will except toned and non-toned images.
In actual fact I had intended that toned pictures be allowed.

The Fération Internationale de l'Art Photographique (FIAP) state:
"A black and white work fitting from the very dark grey (black) to the very clear grey (white) is a monochrome work with the various shades of grey.
A black and white work toned entirely in a single colour will remain a monochrome work able to stand in the black and white category; such a work can be reproduced in black and white in the catalogue of a salon under FIAP Patronage.
On the other hand a black and white work modified by a partial toning or by the addition of one colour becomes a colour work (polychrome) to stand in the colour category; such a work requires colour reproduction in the catalogue of a salon under FIAP Patronage."
Of course, Damien can define whatever rules he wants as it's his comp.

She's a young Andalusian in full winter mode. I should mention that my friend is bringing her on and she has not yet done any dressage tests yet. She is an ongoing project, but a stunning horse!

I believe that the answer is… Yes… followed by No…
<edit>…followed by 'brand spanking new' would be nice though </edit>

Had another run through the entries just now. Goodness there are some really good photos there. I would not like to be the judge this month.
Well done everyone, even in advance of the results.

Surely you're not saying that you are all equipment and no idea?

Okay, okay! Cards on the table. The way it works is... those who submit early in the competition have a better chance than those who submit at the last minute? Simple

Re: Ruling please

Just a reminder as to why we're all here :
-------------------------------------
"Using black and white*"
What is special about monochrome? Shoot anything you like in black and white*, but pay attention to what makes monochromatic pictures special and use those characteristics to your advantage.
*Read 'monochrome' for 'black and white'
-------------------------------------
When you post your pictures does not matter. Posting your pictures does matter. Me? I'm just trying to boost my post count before April

added mine..

Posted mine up at last. All are excellent entries so far - shaping up to be a good month I reckon.
I do have another slightly different shot I was thinking of using (with the king on it's side) but our lass hates it so used the one she likes.
Any comments appreciated as usual

Re: FujiSigmaNolta

Thanks Tanya! Mine was digital and colour, but I thought if I convert it to mono the shadow will stand out more and give more character to the picture. The original is here but I quite prefer the mono version myself.

I find a lot with mono if it's good in colour it's good in mono, like your original version as well
