What's winter? I'm hoping that I'll get a 'cold' shot to enter this month. So far flowers are already blooming and frosts are gone before it's light enough to take a photo! Or perhaps I've got one of last years on file somewhere!

Perhaps in these days of global warming, winter means something very different to the traditional view? With the forecast this weekend in this area, I will struggle to capture anything "wintry".

I think with the shots title being "Hove seafront" and the attire of the people in the image that it is quite obvious that this is indeed a winter shot, it's just that the link is a lot more "subtle" than some of the more "obvious" winter images?

I wasnt thinking winter either, I thought perhaps autumn...but I wasnt aware we meant to be saying winter, it says "clues to the season" so that can be any season, no?

Maybe not even a weather-season, cant we have season of goodwill, or Easter, or or something like that? Hmmm...if I do have a go (which lets face it is pretty unlikely... ) Ill probably not be shooting anything that insludes weather itself, it'd be something like indoor shots giving a hint of what it's like outside or something...emphasis on the "Clue to"...

As for John's image... whilst I do agree that it is an excellent image, I have to concur with Geoff, in that it doesn't really indicate winter, IMO... especially considering the sun is obviously shining!!!

How do you know it is Winter? - General Comments...

I wasn't going to write anything on this...

But...

I think the main thing is to read the brief, understand it and take a photo that fills the brief.

In this case, "Take a picture that demonstrates that winter is upon us. There are many ways of doing this, so you are not limited to any particular photographic genre. Think about how the world looks a certain way when it is bleedin’ cold outside."

Look at the photo you want to enter and ask yourself, does it show winter? Does it portray what winter is and how it effects us and the world around us.

I think the same thing happened last month, people read the brief but didn't follow it.

As nice as Johns photo is, you've got people there basking in the sun reading books! So unless he's showing the effects of global warming by showing people enjoying the unseasonal weather, personally I don't think it fits the brief.

There's a few other photos that have been entered this month that could be any time of the year and give no clue that it's winter. And that's what this months comp is supposed to be all about!

Re: How do you know it is Winter? - General Comments...

I realised before posting the picture that it didn't scream out "WINTER!!!" but global warming was on my mind in that, down south at least, this is getting to be more typical of winter weather and snow is becoming increasingly rare. Yes, the sun was shining brilliantly and people were out in force to take advantage of it, but it was cold and I hoped that the clothing would help to tell this story.

Thank you. I'm really glad that you like it.

I can assure you it really was just as cold as it looks in the photo. The Mamiya has a cast alloy film back, and my breath was literally freezing on the metal.

It had been a very bright, sunny afternoon, which felt reasonably warm in the sun (well, as warm as - 2 °C ever can feel), but the moment the sun went down we felt as if we were being frozen alive - it just got so cold so quickly.

Looking at your Frozen Stream I guess you would have a similar story? I am not a great fan of B&W, but yours is an excellent shot, which gives a very cold and desolate feel.

Winter

Winters here seldom include snow, and even a frost that stays in rare, hence my original submission of a winter sea. Following the comments I wasn't sure if it would speak winter to everyone.

Then I was driving home and saw a sunset that said winter more loudly to me, so have changed my entry to that (with thanks to Chris for doing the swap for me)
