Re: Jan08 comments “Self portrait”

I'll open the commentary shall I?!

The guidance states "You should include your camera or some reference to your photographic interest ". How do I include my camera and use it to take the picture of myself (given that this is a self-portrait competition)? There can only be so many pictures taken in a mirror. Anything taken by anyone else is, I assume, invalid and not everyone has more than one camera.

Finally, the opening two images seem to ignore the above guidance (or maybe interpret it in a way that is beyond my comprehension).

This'll be an interesting one!

Re: Jan08 comments "Self portrait"

I think the first two may have been shot using a self timer so I guess we're ok there(I'll give them the benifit of doubt )....but I don't see the reference to the subject being a photographer either

Re: Jan08 comments "Self portrait"

Actually the camera was in my outstretched hand! I couldn't think of an unusual way of showing myself and include the camera, so I just went for it anyway.

Have to admit I was a bit confused at that brief?

Re: Jan08 comments “Self portrait”

You have an 'or' situation there - you can either:

- include your camera

or

- some reference to your photographic interest

In your case you could photograph yourself holding a flower, for example.

If I were Daft Biker, I might well do a mugshot of myself with a wasp on my nose ...

I appreciate the "or" but I interpretted the guidance as "you can include your camera or anything that shows your interest in photography" rather than "...anything that you like to photograph"...?

I inferred that the intent of the competition was "me, the photographer".

I've let both slip over the last few years. My interest in photography is back and I've been picking up the guitar again over Christmas and bashing out some horrific noise. I need to search out some live music venues locally, I do miss it.

Hate having my pic taken..

Well, finally got round to putting my mugshot on the forum - had to hide a bit behind my camera (bit shy).

What d'ya all think?

Tech stuff..
Taken on a Canon Ixus 50 plugged into the telly for live view compositon. Sat in front of telly with MF camera on tripod. It's wierd trying to frame yourself doing this, waving the camera about while watching yourself. Must have taken about 30 odd shots before choosing this one.

I turned it into a greyscale pic using PS7 didn't really need to alter anything except for a bit of dodging and burning (reminded me of the old days in a darkroom with propper stuff )

Believe me, life really takes off at 65, when you start drawing the good old pension money. If, like me, you are still working the extra cash is useful to spend on holidays and photo kit. The kids are off your hands, well almost and it is only the grandchildren that cost a few bob now and again.

You do need to make good provision for the pensions though if you want to retire completely.

Regarding the competition, one could set up a camera on a tripod, focus on a spot, set the self timer, move into position holding a large mirror that showed your camera. or you can simply 'break the rules'.

That's one cool image Clive. Love the promo poster style thing you have going on & like the way you have really worked the brief; nice one

As I've never taken a shot worthy of a competition, let alone entered one, I have no idea how open to interpretation the brief is! I mean how much of an advantage will an image that nails the brief have, over an image of the same quality that just about fits the brief?

Obviously I'm not talking about any of the entries so far, just a general question about competitions such as this. - Might be best if people answer based on what image they would choose when entering a club competition.

I have a couple if ideas for this months theme (pulling them off is a different matter!) and may well have a go. Just for fun thou, my ability will hinder me greatly but hey ho; if it drives me to try out a few ideas and I gain from that, I'll be a happy boy

Re: T.Biscuit

Thanks Teddy: I know very little about competitions, especially photographic ones: I do enter this one quite frequently, and I think most have a fairly wide brief. This one does, though I understood that a camera might have to be in the picture somewhere, though I may well be wrong.

I much prefer the wide brief as it usually gives rise to a great variety of interpretations. But I always see this one as a place to have a bit of fun and sometimes push the boat out a bit.

I'm afraid my image is plagiaristic: viz Toulouse- Lautrec and Aristide Bruant:

Yes. However I am slightly unsure. Never having met or seen Nick I can't be certain but that shot has an uncanny resemblance to our esteemed Tharg (whom I have to admit to also never meeting but have seen photos of), and also I'm bu**ered if I know how else it could be a 'self-portrait' (other than employing a tripod, of course )

I refer you to the brief:

"Is it really you?

For this round take a picture of yourself as you would like other forum members to see you. The picture might show you exactly as you are, but you are also free to distort the truth. How would we ever know whether you are lying or not?"

So a few key point:

Is it really you? - good question.

For this round take a picture of yourself as you would like other forum members to see you. - I can't think of any way I would prefer to be seen.

you are also free to distort the truth - indeed.

How would we ever know whether you are lying or not? - absolutely.

you are also free to distort the truth - indeed.

How would we ever know whether you are lying or not? - absolutely.
