When I took the shot a couple of weeks ago, I thought I had a white semi- transparent lens cap that you could read the embossed makers name through when left on the lens....... but it was one off an old Panasonic video camera that's long since binned. Ah well.

AJUK - Kids

Had a bit of a shock when I first viewed that photo... the woman on the left looks the spit of my Mum when she was younger which then made me think whether I was the kid on the left...

All very disturbing... need a lie down.

december

Anyone with any pointers on this month, not entirely sure in what rules are to be broken.

Sounds odd, but I really was try something I haven't before, buying an ebay camera (cheapy cheap) plopping the timer on it, and throwing it off a bridge!!!

Then, as long as the memory card survived, see what I got lol.

Probably the main one is The Rule Of Thirds

Then perhaps You Should Never Have An Out Of Focus Object In The Foreground

And Never Have An Even Number Of The Same Item In A Photo

And other such things...

Tie a bit of elastic onto it.......................that way you get an even more interesting effect as well as getting your camera back!

P.S. Just watch there isn't someone "punting" under the bridge first lest you hit them on the knapper with your camera!

That just about sums up everything I do anyway.

I took the breaking the rule description slightly differently.
I took a perfectly good photography, even if the horizon is dead center(that broke a rule), then added abrasions, lens distortion etc... Like I do with most of my pictures.

Anyway it’s nice to be back again. Hopefully I will stay around a bit longer this time. I look forward to winning this month

Yup, it's a toughie. The judges will probably have the choice of images that such good use of their rule-breaking style that they don't seem 'odd' at all, or images that are just plain perverse for the fun of it!

I interpreted the challenge to be for an image that was improved by deliberate contravention of the rules/norms for the type of picture. In my case (landscape) I also chose, for a focus, something that would normally be cropped out, obscured by a handy tree or photoshopped away as an eyesore. By dropping the horizon to the bottom of the frame, excluding all depth information and clues about location and placing the focus in the middle, I count 5 rules at least a bit bent.

Perhaps I should have posted it upside down?

Really, you should be ashamed of that picture. It’s horrible. It really does break the rules. Lots of rules.
1. Lamp post
2. Its wonkey
3. The bike belongs to the Operative society. Which it may do. But I think it’s a co-operative.
4. I can see you in the window.
5. All the stock in the shop is passed its sale by date.
6. AND it should be in black and white or a horrid sepia

But it’s engaging. It must be. I wrote a list.

AND you should have been flat to the post so if you drew an imaginary line between you the lamp post and the shop front with the shop front creating the top of T with an even 50:50 spit left and right. AND the bottom of the lamp post shouldn’t be in the shot.
So much wrong with that photo. I think you should win it.

Oh, Tanya, now you're getting into the realms of philosophy.

I well remember in the sixth form physics lesson having a discussion about pop and classical music. The master said words to the effect that classical music was better because it was appreciated by the few rather than the masses.

But I could write some music or paint a picture that no-one in the world would like, so I guess they must be brilliant. And that would make Jack Vittriano's paintings rubbish..................

Ah, I finally see what he meant.

Also funny how some percieve what they like is somehow better than anythings else. I hate the term 'that's rubbish' you ask why and the response is 'because I don't like it'!

Some bloke once told me he didn't like monochrome 'because it doesn't exist', which is precisely why I like it I responded. Same with IR.

As for what's rubbish, I know what's rubbish, it's just RUBBISH innit?

And someone who copies Edward Hopper's style, applies it to figures pinched from a book of photographs, and sticks it all on a beach is, you guessed it, RUBBISH!

The brief

I was not sure about this one, but I kept being drawn to it. Basically, I don’t believe in rules anyway, although if you follow them it can help. For those who know the rules, break them, but still try to make the image engaging. For thos who don’t, just think ‘art-house’ — lets see what we get. the subject can be anything.

The only way you'll get the last para is to use filters

Just out of interest would you put mine in the class of 'using to many filters applied' if so I'd like to defend it

Re: Help is at hand

I wouldn't say that that is breaking the rules.

My interpretation is that it has to include at least one (if not all) of the following...

A head chopped off.
The bottom of someone's legs chopped off.
Something slap bang in the centre of the frame.
Something shot directly into the sun.
Camera shake or the main subject being out-of-focus, whilst the rest is IN focus.
A shot having too many elements (preferably an even number).
Burnt out highlights or shadows with no detail.
Possibly the image having a cast (magenta or cyan being favourable).
The horizon being distinctly wonky.

If you can do ALL of these in one shot, Bob's your uncle!

Surely digital camera sensors are analogue too, even though the signals get converted to digital? If someone always scans their film negatives, does that mean they can call their camera 'digital'?

At the end of the day it's surely about producing interesting and stimulating images? At my camera club I don't think anyone can consistently tell good quality traditional film images from digital ones. Can you?

If someone always scans their film negatives, does that mean they can call their camera 'digital'?

Not sure about that John, but I suppose it makes a scanner into an analog to digital converter ????

Yep!

The easiest way to tell film from digital prints is to askk the photographer!

The other give away often is oversharpening halos all over the place (Digital of course).

Some techno spaz on TV last night referred to film as being analog as opposed to digital.

A couple of other forums I frequent use that phrase as well. Completely baffled me when I first heard it as I didn't know that was what they were meaning!
