Dear Forum Members Here are the results of the Forum’s October photographic competition. This month the theme was “Shadows” and I apologise for the delay in posting the results. I must say that I thought some of the entries were a tad tenuous in their link to the theme, but it was nice to see so many entries. Now, regulars may recall that I sometimes ask for a second opinion from AP’s Art Editor Mark Jacobs, but unfortunately Mark was ill on the day of judging so I enlisted the views of our Creative Director Brett Lewis. I mention this because a picture that may have been a winner this month, sadly, after some discussion, had to be sidelined. GeoffL’s Rails is a beautiful shot, but he appears to have confused shadows with reflections. Am I being too tough and pedantic? Personally, I don’t think so, but let me know if you disagree. Anyway, this month I have awarded five Highly Commended and one Winner — they are as follows. Highly Commended: TonyCro — Ages
Brett liked this immediately because of the colours and the shapes — particularly that created by the holding of hands, which gives the image an emotional/human connection. The framing is good, and the only criticism is the minor detail of the piece of paper intruding on the child at the bottom and stick that catches the eye at the top of the adult’s legs. Whilst I am not a fan of photo-fiddling, this is a picture that could really benefit from some Photoshop work to make it realise its full artistic potential. Highly Commended: dream_police — Hay loft
This caught my eye several times because it almost felt like too separate images in a black frame. It probably falls foul of composition rules, which is maybe my attraction! I like the fact that one the images has lots of detail and the other blank, but for the shadow of the window frame. This might even work as a total abstract if rotated into a horizontal with the view from the window on the right and light hitting the wall on the left. Highly Commended: BigWill — Stairway to Heaven
I really love this picture and it was a close call for the number one slot. There is something ‘Kafka’ about it (by that I mean visually reminiscent of Orson Well’s mono masterpiece, The Trial). There is something not right about the quality — what sort of camera/film was used? Dare I say there is something of the camera phone about this? — Big Will please reveal all. Highly Commended: glyn_gagetta — Night Shadows
I haven’t got a blessed clue what is going on here but I love it. I think the shades of brown and gold are very warm and calming and I like the hand poised in an almost ‘Vulcan’ greeting. Brett felt the three dimensional element between the eyes was rather distracting and once he mentioned it I had to agree. Still, whatever it is (and perhaps the photographer may share this with us all) I rather like it. Highly Commended: Bettina — Brighton pier
Both Brett and I liked this, his only negative comment being the slightly darker patch where the head is directly impacting the material of the chair. The eye naturally goes there and that detracts from the lovely wobbly shape of the head and ‘wing-nut’ ears (another job for P-shop?). Winner: Lounge Lizard — Wall Shadows![]() Well, there is no doubting that this image is about shadows. I love the use of the diagonal and the fantastic position and shape of the person. It is a shame about the rails at the top as they do lend an element of confusion and I think the picture would have been a world-beater if it had a clean diagonal, but this is a real moment and one of the most interesting pictures this year. Conclusion: So, as usual a big well done to everyone who took part — great to see so many mind-expanding images. Interestingly the next theme is Abstract, which probably follows on nicely from this round, so I am looking forward to seeing all of your work at the end of the month. All the best Garry C-W |

Got to say that there a good few images that I was expecting to make the final shortlist and haven't even had a sniff. Well done to all who made the final selection. |

Congratulations to David. Well done to the HC's - of whom BigWill is one. If he keeps on like this we'll start mistaking him for a 'tog..........

Thank you to GCW for another difficult set of choices. Congratulations to the worthy winners. On seeing David's photograph my wife immediately said: "Oooh, that's my favourite," so perhaps if GCW is indisposed in the future. . .I can offer her as a temporary adjudicator? |

Thanks, Garry! David's pic is great. And you're right about the black patch. I noticed that, too. But, have you noticed the "second" face yet? If you look at the left hand side of his head, you should see the profile of a man with a tash. Oh, and once you've found that face, you won't see the dark patch any more.

(It's now free to get into the Ecos centre)As for "camera phone" Garry Garry.......................I'd sooner be seen coming out of a Welsh barn with a sheep than be caught dead with one of those things! No, it was my 10D but as it's a bit naff at the high iso stuff (which the original was shot at) I had to use some noise reduction software on the image which combined with it's conversion from the colour original has contributed to that rather "unreal" effect.Anyway, a big thanks to Garry and well done to David and all the other commended entries. I could get to like this you know! ![]() BigWill |

Obviously, I would have to disagree and I sorry that there is not the mechanism/time to explain why. It would be great if we could sit down and I could take you through them, but unless you want to visit me at the IPC offices (which you are welcome to do) that is not really possible. I think successful images are more than a construct — they must generate an emotional response from the viewer. I have said on a number of occasions that an important aspect of my criteria for judging is based on what the image does for me. Would I put it on the wall? So in that sense the judging is very personal as well as having a viewpoint on how well the image is rendered. I hope this explains it — all the best — Garry |

I have to say that I agree with a number of sentiments being expressed in this thread: 1. the number of images that I felt missed the brief was high. Pretty much all photographs ever taken will include some degree of shading, and a few this month were tenuous to say the least 2. every month I expect high things and, except for the first month that I entered, I have been disappointed to be overlooked/ignored/discounted. Almost every month I see images being commended that mine is 'better' than, but then I take it on the chin and steel myself to do better next month. That's the risk of entering a subjectively-judged competition (on a related matter, my horse takes part in dressage competitions which are also subjectively judged - I have seethed at some scores in the past!) 3. I agree with the winning shot - always was the one for me. But then, what do I know?!

Quote:Quote: Well I think ian_g should take over the judging of this competition... ...of course, my opinion may well be biased ![]() Seriously though, Gary's reply that the choice of winner is entirely subjective is so true. If each of us were to judge the competition I'm sure we'd all come up with a different winner! On the subject of judging, IIRC Gary agreed to continue judging after his promotion only for this year. Presumably then, Damien will take over next year unless another method is chosen. May I suggest a system where we vote for our favorite photo each month (but obviously not our own entry ) using the forum poll facility or something similar?Just a thought! |

Quote: Of course, Chris. It depends on how you view the judging. An image may have many different merits. Technique, Humour, Imagination, Colour, Composition, Lighting and once these elements have been taken into consideration, would you buy it to hang on your wall? There are many shots that I look at and think, "that's fabulous" but I wouldn't hang it on my wall. Whenever I have judged at Camera Clubs, I always seem to go for simplicity and the graphical elements of a shot. I certainly wasn't criticising Garry for his choice (I have no right to), just surprised that some hadn't made the finalists. I dug the hole and I think I've managed to fill some of it in without anyone noticing

Quote: Actually, there is a way in which you could do this. All you need is a web conference where people can dial in via the phone and view the same applications in real time via the PC. This can then be recorded with the audio and web synched for later replay. See here for more information. I've thought in the past about suggesting it for a form of distance learning for photography and software applications. The Gaurniad once ran a web event sponsored by Microsoft where Martin Argles, a leading press photographer, talked about his style and photographs. |

I think that is a very interesting idea and perhaps one that Damein may be able to employ when he takes over the judging of the forum competition in the New Year. It all depends on whether our internal IT/internet staff are able to set it up, but well worth a try — Garry |

Quote: Morning Garry, I, for one, am very glad to see you state that opinion as, whilst I try to achieve the usual perfects -- exposure, focus and composition -- in photographs I would still rather have a photo that will evoke some kind of response, albeit positive or negative and emotional, verbal or physical, from the person or persons viewing the photo. Here is a example of what I mean, photo-wise Cheers, Jack |

Garry, there's very little the AP IT team would have to do, the main limitations of the service are with the people joining the web conference in terms of their operating systems and internet connection speed. If Damien's interested I'd be more than happy to go through the details. |
