Thanks Myk. I'm not sure about heaven being at the top of those stairs either.....................more like the generator room at the ECOS centre Ballymena actually! (Explains why I got one in early this month..................same venue as last month's entry from the same shoot! ) Anyway, it's the thought that counts!

Unfortunately a lot of the ones I seem to meet are of the "greater spotted" variety. But for a fiver a time you can't complain

You are all aware that the "greater" and "lesser" spotted moniker relating to birds is not so much to do with their plumage, but more about how often you see them....

Re: Oct07 comments "Shadows" - RobertJ

Thanks Mick, I'm not good at (aesthetic) rules (although, say, know something about golden proportion, even its mathematical details), so could you please point out what rules are broken here (honestly, I was not aware of the fact that this photo breaks obvious rules)? Thanks.
If I would like to single out the photos which caught my eye so far I would mention OneTen's Round Tower and Hotblack's Spider Monkey.
I confess that lately I was not much active on this forum, mainly because I was at HRPC, it is a Croatian photowebsite, I'm originally form Croatia and partly I might like being there because it connects me with my home country, although I like England very much, but I like the photos there, the ability to have galleries with image storage space provided by the site (so far it is free but there are rumours that a membership fee will be introduced), the ability to comment on each photo (either in one's galleries or in competition), the ability to give favs to photos (one can give to each photo a favourite vote, but recently a negative vote too), competition with grading system, forum, etc., of course forum is not as near as active as AP forum, but most of the activity happens in the galleries and photo comments as well as in competitions.
I think that AP readers would welcome some similar site, say APPC, as, say, it would be convenient to have one's photos in once place, i.e. in various user's galleries hosted by the site, etc., nevertheless I understand that there are difficulties in finding the right software and hosting on the Internet for such a large amount of data, HRPC is maintained by an enthusiastic computer programmer, so the software in more or less not an issue (although every new version is full of bugs, the server is rather slow, and all does not look at a very professional level, but it works, more or less), the restrictions on file sizes is not so severe as here in AP forum and people do not have to worry about every byte in their image files, although as I can see people do not exaggerate ether in file sizes or pixel count.
Okay, one can say there is for example flickr, but I have the impression that the site is huge and is devoted to all, not just amateur photographers, so one is lost in the multitude of all sorts of people taking photos, from snappers to more advanced photographers.
The programmer of the HRPC site is in the process of creating other (national) sites, so far there is HRphotocontest (Croatian) and now recently introduced BLKANphotocontest (Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia and Monete Negro), the plan for the future is to have SIphotocontest (Slovenia), CZphotocontest (Czech) and SKphotocontest (do not know what it will cover). I wondered if there would be an interest for UKphotocontest (covering UK). It is interesting that members of various photocontest sites will be able to interact (i.e. each other vote for images, write comments, etc.). I am not sure if the software and the server would be capable of handling so much data. Members of the sites are interacting with the programmer, so often users' ideas had been implemented and the set of features is growing more or less tailored by the users.

Here are three things. Remember that it's just my opinion though.
1. The foreground is featureless. Conventional wisdom would say that you need something of interest in the foreground and something that leads your eye into the picture. 2. The main subject (the sunlit thing that looks like a sofa) is more or less in the middle of the picture. Again conventional wisdom would have you place it on one of the thirds. 3. What, for me, passes as the horizon (the junction between the sand and the structures) is more or less in the middle of the picture. Once more conventional wisdom would say have it on a third.
It just goes to show that such 'rules' are no such thing. They exist for guidance only. More often than not they work but in this case who cares - for me this picture is excellent.

I see a few beautiful birds every day, lovely plumage but if I ask them if they're greater or lesser spotted then I fear for my future ability to walk properly or sit without a soft cushion!!!

Re: Oct07 comments "Shadows" - RobertJ

Some great photos up already. I'm a bit confused as to how I interpret the specification.
Is this a light and shade thing as in hotblacks and fujisigmanolta entry or should one be aiming for a projected shadow like weasley and TonyCro. And then to confuse me even more is a reflection (geoffls lovely photo) a shadow of sorts?
I know people like to say photography is painting with light but it also must mean painting with shade as well. Is shade and shadow the same thing?
And the whole photography meaning “painting with light” sounds a bit intellectual, or is it just me?
And should I get more sleep before posting such silly questions?

Nah, from bench level MacDonalds can't be seen - hidden by the bushes and other worthwhile stuff!!! It's more of a photo with a moral - check your foreground when using a 24mm lens!!!

Frankly speaking, in my behalf at least, I think my entry has more to do with shades than shadows, but there was a bit of shadow play. I just don't know a lot of the times what to submit and I have been sifting through some of my photos to see if I have anything else I can submit. The one here seemed like a good idea at the time, but now I'm not so sure.

Re: Oct07 comments "Shadows" - RobertJ
|

I must admit that I like FujiSigmaNolta's photo, not sure if I'm blinded by the subject, though... ...shade: representation of shadow or darkness in a picture, painting, etc.: This artist uses light and shade to good effect. ...shadow darkness caused by the blocking of direct light, esp. sunlight: The small window threw a patch of sunlight onto the floor, but the rest of the room was in shadow. | He walked along in the shadows hoping no one would recognize him.

Shadow is simple the relative lack of light, the deeper the shadow, the less light present, in relative terms. Shade is just another form of shadow.

I've just posted one - be gentle, it's my first...
The Long Walk runs just East of North, so I planned to go there one evening in May when the shadows cast by the Horsechestnuts would be at right angles. The rythmically alternating light/shade was the subject of the picture, honest!

Re: Oct07 comments "Shadows"
|

I saw some of the neatest "shadow" pictures yesterday, but wasn't able to get a print.
I had a stent fitted at Papworth and was able to watch the whole "real-time" procedure on x-ray monitors.
It's impressive. Good contrast and resolution, high magnification and relatively shallow depth of field allows concentration on a small area of interest.
Now that it's done I'm hoping I'll be able to carry my camera kit up hills again . . . . .

The picture was taken in Prague on the underground, the walls of the tunnels were covered in these colourful tiles which looked great with the dim light casting shadows on the tile shapes, here's a bigger picture of the tunnel...not very good quality as taken with a small digital compact camera.

Really? I think that just goes to show that you don't look around you wehn you travel on the Underground. There are some wonderful old stations combined with some stunning state of the art new ones. I'm always noticing things for the first time when I'm riding the Tube.

Yes, I agree... a big part of the reason for me enjoying photography is that it makes me start noticing things, even when I don't have my camera with me. Some of our underground stations are stunning.

None of the ones I used were stunning. I liked some of the old brickwork, but everything gets covered in posters these days. You'll have to do a pictoral Mornington Crescent thread, featuring the best of the tube.

Nice one El Sid!
What's that got to do with Brighton Pier and how do reflections become shadows?
I dunno about Brighton Pier (which by the way Bettina's pic is brill!) but even though El Sid's pic may not fit the brief fully, I liked the effect. There is a bit of shadow play there me thinks.

Re: Shadows

Well, I had 2 days off work for a long week-end and it appears to have been overcast or raining for all of them so I have resorted to a shot from last week-end when trying out my new lens. The tree on the right is totally burnt out from the bright sunlight but the rest has come out more-or-less acceptable to my eyes. I've adjusted the contrast and brightness a little, and made a small crop but otherwise I'd be very interested to hear what you folks think of it.

I like the idea behind this but it rankles slightly that the distant flagpole doesn't seem to cast a shadow at all.

You're right. It doesn't!
Never noticed that before. I didn't take it out of the photo. Just looked at the original and it's not there either.
How odd!

Re: Oct07 comments "Shadows"

Think I must be going crazy!
First-timer entrant here! I've just spent a little while "learning" how to post an image. I had an image which for small size (240x180 pix) was 19450 bytes, medium size (500x375 pix) was 135,668 bytes, and large size (640x480) is 79,148 bytes! In my simple minded world, I would have thought that a "large" would be bigger file size than "medium".
Is there a reason behind these numbers? Do I just blame Flikr? Shall I remain in the corner mumbling quietly to myself?
(Guess for the next time I rake up the courage to enter, I'll have to fine tune the size on my hard drive before I Flikr it) (And I've probably got the wrong forum for this question as well )

Re: Oct07 comments "Shadows"

it to do with Flickr and the additional info that it stores with you file so it knows whether it is a small, medium, large or original.
If you re-size your image on your PC, to 600px on the longest edge and under 100kb using a 'save for web' or 'save as' and upload to Flickr. Then, click on your pic in Flickr and go to original size and use that URL, that one will be the same size as on your PC.

I was told that a box of liquorice spirals would be sufficient!
If that isn't the case, I want them returned (uneaten) by the weekend. My girlfriend was very upset when she found out I hadn't bought them for her

I do too BUT I find the top right hand corner of the image distracting. The white sheet (or whatever it is) seems to take my eye away from the fabulous shadows and I'm not too sure that I like the woman's (the figure on the left) head disappearing into the privet bush
