Results July 2007 Forum Competition

Dear Forum Members

Here are the results of the Forum’s July photographic competition.

This month the theme was “Passion” and I think it is fair to say that this has been the toughest round so far. Why? Well, maybe Passion is not that easy to define. In fact I would argue that it is extremely difficult and I salute you all for your excellent efforts. Certainly, ‘Passion’ meant very different things to different people and from my perspective some of the interpretations were not particularly passionate. I think the best picture submitted was from tincup — It’s always business, never personal. It is a beautifully structured portrait, but it is clearly bereft of passion — the opposite of the theme, so I could not award it a prize. Equally, the variations of passion fruit were witty and literal, but didn’t work for me. Anyway, on to the results.

This month I have awarded two Highly Commended and one Winner — they are as follows.

Highly Commended: Rustyknight — The Boxer

competition winner

There is clearly passion in this image and as an aside I think it is particularly powerful that the boxer is female. The composition is very strong, with the eye natural going to the eyes of the subject. In this case the tight crop works very well to focus on the subject’s intent.

Highly Commended: gouranga — passion

competition winner

Again, another clear example of passion, this time I like the way the subject is centred in the frame and yet he still stands out from the rest of the crowd. The depth of field here isn’t great and in this example this is an advantage as you can see the faces of the other fans clearly enough but not too much.

Winner: Ian_A — Love

competition winner

I am not sure that this image is quite as passionate as the two highly commendeds, but then maybe passion is a very personal thing. Certainly, for me this is the best image. It is beautifully framed and constructed and the overall effect does (for me) evoke emotion, which all images should. Again, following my ethos of ‘would you display this picture on the wall?’ Yes, I would.

Conclusion:

So, a big well done to everyone who took part — this was a tough round, but I have no doubt we have all learned something — even if it is not have a round titled ‘passion’! The next theme is Movement and I see that you have already started posting, so I’ll look forward to judging those at the end of the month.

All the best

Garry C-W

Re: Results July 2007 Forum Competition

Congrats Ian! But I must say I think the "Highly Commendeds" were more about passion. I think your pic is great but I also think that the message in it is more about love. Maybe if the you could get the people in the pic to "french kiss" .....

Anyway, congratulations!

A tough category this month, with Garry's chosen few being very well-deserved.

Thanks to Garry for judging. It happened that my favourite was the winner (maybe my taste is improving ). Later, I've also noticed daft_biker's entry which I thought could catch Garry's attention. I've also noticed that tincup's entry was very good but could not figure out where is the passion. I also like Mr_Geoff's, Done&rundleCams' and Silverfox_1969's entries. Congratulations to the winner and the commendend ones, and well done to all who entered the competition.

Congrats to the winners. I found this the hardest yet, emotions are concepts that as a non-people person I found hard to translate into a photograph; so especially well done to those that managed to fill the brief!

Re: Results July 2007 Forum Competition

I've got a suggestion for a topic for next year's competition. Don't let Ian enter to give everyone else a chance.

Better still we'll all have to improve to match him.

Well done Ian and the highly commended entries.

Thanks to Garry for his usual good judging.

Re: Results July 2007 Forum Competition

I'd like to thank Garry for choosing my photo this month. It's good that he makes the time to support the competition, even though he's moved on from the Editor's post at AP,

Congratulations to Gouranga and Rustyknight, and all those who made the effort to enter, and thanks also for the comments above.

When I looked up the meaning of the word 'Passion', most online dictionaries said it was a strong emotion such as love, joy, hatred, or anger. I considered using some male friends to portray anger or 'hate'. One is a 6'4" bouncer with shaven head, the other has a naturally angry look. I also thought about going for 'sorrow', using Cath (my model in the photo above) and some running mascara. Cath vetoed the idea though, so I went for 'love'.

The competition brief said: This months theme is "Passion" Thanks to the circle of confusion
Garry says. "I think this can also be taken as emotion." I'm happy in my own mind I've fulfilled the brief.

Didn't enter again this month otherwise I just know I'd have beaten Ian - NOT.

Completely agree with Garry's top three, and Ian's image is a stunner.

Well done all.
