Dear Forum Members Here are the results of the Forum’s June photographic competition. This month the theme was “Wildlife” and I must say the that quality and diversity of your entries was really amazing from the fairly traditional to the frankly bizarre — yes, I do mean you, Chris (Suiya)! There is no doubt in my mind that some of this work could grace the final list of the BBC Wildlife competition. Whilst none of the rounds have been easy to judge, this one has been tougher than most because of the diversity and the quality. I will reiterate that the final choice I have made is as much personal as it is technical and I believe that the images selected are ones that I would put up on the wall as a work of photographic art. This time I have chosen six Highly Commended’s and two for Joint Winner. They are as follows: Highly Commended: SCPhoto — Curious duck
I just love this picture. At first I thought it was taken at ground level — which would have been brilliant, but then realised the duck was on a wall. Either way, it is quirky and funny — ie it raised a positive emotion, which I think is a good thing. It’s a shame the background is slightly distorted — but I couldn’t leave this picture out. Highly Commended: Daft biker — Civilised evolution
I’m not a great fan of insect shots, as I could not imagine anyone would put them up on the wall, (although I am sure people do) but this image displays such wonderful depth and is so unusual that it had to be commented on. I love the insect at the bottom entering what appears to be a cave with a white bright light, which the eye is drawn to. Does it know another is behind? Highly Commended: Ian_g — Critter
As I have already stated, insect shots are not something that most people would put on the wall as they often look more ‘scientific’, rather than ‘artistic’. However, the background in Ian_g’s image could almost be described as being impressionistic. Highly Commended: Datawise — Sweeping majestically across
Is this a genuine picture or the result of some computer manipulation? There is something unreal about this image, but I like it all the same. A linear composition, your eye travels from left to right, it is extremely pleasant viewing. Highly Commended: Ellie527 — Feed me, Feed me now!
This looks like it has been shot on a bird table, which means anyone could set up a shot like this in their back garden — assuming they have one. The background is beautifully out of focus and I love the diffused greens. Of course it is all about the moment and that has been captured perfectly. Highly Commended: AAB — This is nuts!
An amazing shot of notoriously wary creature. AAB will have to tell us how he managed this. Joint Winner: Johnpw — Fox with squirrel![]() Lets hope this isn’t the same squirrel that AAB captured! Anyway, this is a fantastic image. One of the best wildlife pictures I have ever seen. I love the way the fox is in the centre of the frame and I love the way the background is just a green blur. I hope John tells us how he captured this image — absolutely first rate. Joint Winner: bagpuss — Cunning as a fox![]() John’s picture was a stone favourite to be the outright winner until I saw this. I love the low angle of the shot, and the light just touching the head. I love the shape and the way the picture has been framed — nice one. Conclusion: A big well done to everyone who took part — I thought that there was some exceptional stuff there. The next theme is Passion and I see that you have already started posting, so I’ll look forward to judging those at the end of the month. All the best Garry C-W |

You had an unenviable task this month, Garry, with some exceptional work being submitted. As soon as I saw Bagpuss's shot, I had a good idea that it was a contender for winning place. Once again, I'm delighted that mine has made it into the commendeds, considering it was complete luck that Tanya spotted the bug in the first place and I managed to take several photos of it. Well done everyone, an excellent subject choice. |

Garry, thanks so much for your generous comments and judging it a winner in a competition with so many good shots. Happy to say how I got it. Taken from a wildlife hide as it came out of a copse using a Canon 400d with the Canon EF 400mm 1:4 DO + 1.4 extender. I've had the lens since the beginning of the year and am delighted with it. Took a bit of a risk given the mixed reviews the lens has had but all my wildlife photography is hand-held so portability the key factor. |

I know what Gary finds intriguing in Datawise's image: It is not only a great image, but looks slightly like the Windows XP default background, BUT showing the source of the operating system's problems: it's full of BS!! ![]() But definately, great image manipulated or not. |

Great images John and Pam. Both deserve to be winners. Well done. ![]() Well done to the runners up too and, as always, thanks Gary.

Congratulations to the foxy winners, they're amazing pictures. Thank you for the Highly Commended, it's a lovely surprise. My picture was taken through the window using my Olympus E-400 and the kit 40-150 lens, hand held. It was pure chance that the three thrushes landed on the bird table when I'd got the camera handy. I'd never before seen young thrushes being fed, they certainly enjoyed the suet pellets. |

Such a lot of stonking pictures this month, I don't envy Garry one bit - hasn't put a foot wrong, though. Well done Pam and John. Just winners, I think, in a really strong month (by that I don't mean "only just winners", although the others were close, but worthy winners - so why didn't I just say "worthy"). |

Wow - thanks Garry for the Highly Commended, and congrats to the winners - Fantastic Foxy Fotos!! I doubt the fox caught my squirrel as he was enjoying a nutty lunch at Center Parcs - one of the residents I think, and not a guest! I think they try and keep the foxes aways from the squirrels in there... Since you asked, this photo was just one of those where I was 'in the right place at the right time', and was captured with my old Panasonic FZ7. I was looking for interesting subjects around the Rangers Lodge, so the camera was already switched on and ready to go at ISO80 (the only setting on the FZ7 that didn't result in nasty processed pics IMHO). When I spotted Sammy, I just stood as still as I could, framed him and clicked. Lucky capture I guess - but definitely one of my favourites from this trip. I've not been back there since upgrading to the Canon EOS400d with IS lenses, and it will be interesting to see what the new kit allows me to capture when we return later this year.... |

Does Garry still work for IPC? |
AFAIK - Yes! Why do you ask? |
Do I still work for IPC? Yes, I do. I was promoted from AP to become the Group Magazine Editor for the division of IPC called Inspire — which has 48 specialist magazines from AP to Country Life. I suggested to Damien that I would continue to judge this competition till the end of the year, to give him one less thing to do, now he is the AP Editor. Thanks to everyone for the kind comments about my judging — it certainly is not easy, but it is highly enjoyable — your pictures just get better and better — all the best — Garry |
