I'd agree with everything that is said by Fen and El Sid above.
Maximum sizes for most club competitions (that I have come across) usually stipulate a mount no bigger than 50x40cm. An A3 print is a suitable size for this size mount. Thats not to say that an A4 print on a suitably sized mount doesn't have an equal chance. Many prints are also entered at that size.
