Advice of lighting gear please

Before I drop $$$ (or even just $ on used gear) I'd like to know what I'm getting into.
I presume the tripods with umbrellas with light gear is the way to go, but beyond that, what *kind* of gear? The bulbs themseleves, are they all one K rating, or what?
A website to sort this ouot, or general adive is most appreciated.
