As a beginner, I'm guessing that you're using a relatively slow lens (f/3.5 or so)? If so, then 400ISO is a reasonable place to start, especially since "modern" emulsions are smoother grained than their older relations. With print films, the printing can have an effect on the tones as well as the choice of film - possibly more so.

To see what YOU like, best bet is to order a small selection of films from 7dayshop or mailshots.com (to name the 2 places I use) and see which emulsions and speeds you prefer.
