I'm replying to myself because the time in which I can edit has expired.
It is a pity that Nikon are not offering the 16-85 as a possible kit lens with their DX cameras. Perhaps they will do so as the credit crunch crunches further. At a reasonable premium over the budget 18-105 the 16-85 would be as big a reason for new DSLR owners to buy Nikon as the Zeiss 16-80 is to buy Sony.
