You will be lucky if anyone has experience of both of these lenses. Many of us will have one or the other but not both. I have the 16-85 and am more than satisfied. The 16-85 has a distance scale but the 18-105 does not. The 16-85 has a dust seal for the lens mount. Check that the 18-105 is similarly equipped; I suspect that this is not so. You may find Ken Rockwell's opinion interesting.
