Turbines - 44pts, First place

Mark Cook, Kent Samsung GX-10, 70-200mm, 1/2000sec at f/5.6, ISO 200 Mark, a software developer, got fed up with staring at a computer screen all day so he bought a DSLR to help him get outdoors. As his skills grew, he developed a preference for early morning landscapes. ‘This oyster fisherman was taken during the early hours on Whitstable Beach, in Kent, where I went to do some long-exposure work,’ he says. ‘The tide was especially low, so I wandered along to a causeway that goes out into the Thames Estuary on the west side of the harbour. As I approached, this lone figure was wading in water with a net and a bucket. The scene was mesmerising with the calmness of the sea and stillness of the turbines and no discernible horizon.’ Judges say 'Beautiful and serene, like a scene from a dream. Mark has made an astounding image that is both timeless and technically superb.'
