Sony and Zeiss
      #655229 - 14/05/2008 22:50

Ok, this may be a silly question, but here goes...

I'm intrigued by the Carl Zeiss 16-80mm lens available for the Sony dslrs. I've recently bought the A200 with the kit lens, and am very happy with it. But I can't help wondering what benefits the Zeiss lens would bring. It'll cost more than the camera and lens together cost me, but will I really notice the difference?

Would images from the Zeiss lens be so much better than the kit lens, or just slightly better? Hard to quantify maybe, but any thoughts on the matter would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike.

Yes, in a word, you'll see a big improvement in resolution and distortion control - if you do more than print to 6x4 that is.

Best deal I've come across is here - £399.99 with free postage.

Thanks Roger, that's answered my question.

Must say I'm a bit concerned over some of the reviews I've read regarding build quality though, and some even question the optical quality.

Mike.

Early production examples had varying quality control but that was attended to quite quickly and for some time now they seem to have been fine.

Good news. And that was a good price on the link you gave earlier. Trouble is now I was quite taken with the 500mm mirror lens. I used them years ago on manual slrs and always found the focus too critical; an af one might be fun for those wildlife and moon shots.

... considering the very good prices on the few Sony lenses they offer I'll forgive them for not yet having a comprehensive stock of Sony/Minolta fit lenses.

Maybe if they start to sell Sony stuff and also get asked for what the don't list they may just increase their coverage

Just to add to previous comments - I invested in the Zeiss 16-80. Yes it was expensive but the quality is superb and the 16mm end (24mm in full frames terms is so useful). I am retired and do not have money to waste but I have never regretted buying this lens. I was very disappointed with the kit lens. The Zeiss is so much better in sharpness, edge to edge, resolution and colour rendering.
Good luck in your choices.
Dennis

Thanks for all the advice. I really appreciate the responses, especially with what is, for me, a very expensive addition.
