There's the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 EX for at least a grand less...

I don't know how it compares with the Sony lens, but I've got an elderly version for Canon that is an excellent performer, and Huw uses one in Nikon fit more than happily.

I doubt it will have the SSM technology of the Sony nor the 'D' (ADI) capabillity, however Marc, it might be worth your while checking out the Sigma specs just to see what they say, If you don't require the aforesaid technologies then you might want to search for a S/H Minolta 80 - 200 f/2.8 G, which will probably be more in the sort of price bracket you'd be more comfortable with,
Just a thought, but, good luck with the hunt for class glass, if it were me I'd save hard for the Sony (am actually doing so now, but dependant on the new full frame DSLR price the savings may go towards that, oh dear so much gear so little savings  )

Marc,
If its distance you need to cover then at the 300mm length there is the Minolta 300 f/4 HS APO G which may fit the bill, I picked one up for £600 S/H last year and had great results, there were times when it was a bit overkill for some shots and found I was sudenly too close

Although I already had a Sigma 70-300 f3.5-5.6, managed to pick up a Sigma 70-200 f2.8 for £170 on e-bay. It is an older type, as the small lens hood actually screws onto the lens, as opposed to twist fitting. Works a treat though.

Sigma have at last decided is worth making their APO 70-200mm F2.8 II EX DG MACRO HSM in Sony mount. I guess it will be about a grand cheaper than the Sony equivalent - and it does have the internal HSM motor unlike their mark I version for Sony

Looks good Rog, when you getting one, straight away or wait a few months after release?
Actually I wasn't thinking of getting one at all. I don't really have a use for fast lenses, I'd rather sacrifice a stop for the convenience of a smaller size lens. I might be interested in the new Sony 70-300 F4.5-5.6 G SAL-70300G when it becomes available.

Sounds very sensible to me. In the Canon world, I've got the aforementioned ancient version of the Sigma, and it's a really great lens, but I don't like carrying it around all the time. However, I've got a 70-300 IS lens that despite not being quite as sharp, and without the same speed, gets used a lot more because it's easier to carry around. If I were starting from scratch now, I certainly wouldn't have both. There's no point buying more or less lens than you need or can use.

I'm specifically looking at the faster zoom for indoor sports (Showjumping mainly). If anyone knows of alternatives, I'd be delighted to hear.

... getting into the realms of cheap but good lenses, for the A mount, there are of course two quite well known ones. The 70-210mm f4 "beercan" and its big brother the 75-300mm "big beercan". Both date from the early days of Minolta autofocus, 1985 - but still work extremely well on Sony Alphas. BUT there is one more lens, nowhere near as well known but very good, the Sigma 75-200mm f2.8-f3.5 push-pull zoom. Now if you want a VERY cheap quite fast chunk of glass this might be the answer

Must say I am more than a tad surprised that you of all people didn't have a spare basic inexpensive AF SLR sitting around unused on a shelf somewhere that could have been pressed into service as a Sam-trainer.
Are you absolutely sure you bought it for him, and aren't just using the poor lad as an unwitting excuse for some more camera-buying? I really think you should come clean about this and own up. ;-)
