When the ink gets low on this printer, just before the cart is exhausted, there is a 'count down' indicator in the printer driver. I have found that if the cart is allowed to run out completely, when it is replaced the printer runs a head refresh routine. This wastes ink from all of the carts.
On the other hand, if changing the 'empty' cart when '1% remaining' is indicated, the printer does not run the refresh routine as the head and feed pipe is not empty. I think this saves quite a lot of wasted ink and also extends the life of the 'waste ink tank' ( a replaceable item on this printer).
