Poll - happy with your camera?
      #733124 - 22/11/2008 14:36

There are always better cameras around than the ones we own, and reading through the ads in the back of the magazine can often make me drool, but I wondered how satisfied we are with our current cameras. Are there things you'd like yours to do, or do better, and does it offer all the features and functions you'd like to have access to?

When a new feature becomes available, like anti-shake, anti-dust, Live View etc, does it make you want to upgrade, or are you happy enough with what you have already?

Head to the home page to vote in this week's poll: Are you satisfied with your current camera?

Thanks for taking part.

Damien

PS. If you are really unhappy with your current camera you can find my address in the front of the magazine

Whoo! First one in.

I have a Leica M8.2 - are there things I don't care for? Definitely, yes: I could do without the "electronic thumb", which still makes a flaming racket. Noise becomes intrusive above ISO 640, which is well below par nowadays. The snapshot mode is something I don't feel the need for at all, does a Leica need an 'idiot mode'? We'll see I guess. It's worth it for those wonderful lenses though.

If an M9 should appear in due course, perhaps we'll be using that old Goon Show joke, "this is where the story really starts!"

As I'm currently awaiting delivery of another camera (should be about a week before it arrives) that can't be commented on yet. I've also just obtained an orphan lens, which needs a body for yet a third system.

Oh woe is me, I am so unhappy with my Canon 40D Please send me a free 50D by return of post which will please me no end

No, in all honesty, the 40D is the best digital I have owned and I see no need for an upgrade for a couple of years and does everything I ask of it. Combined with my MF film equipment what more could a man ask for in life ?

I'm still using and happy with my 350D, so much so that I sold the Samsung GX-20 I won - my only wish is for better lenses

I remain very happy with my Canon 20D, but my newly acquired 5D is in a different class.

Not interested in gimmicks, IQ above all.

I am also very happy with my aged Pentax ME and MX cameras, but would like to replace them with brand new versions of the same!

My cameras are all relatively old and mostly purchased secondhand. Inevitably they are therefore not up to date with all the latest functionality but I know where all the relevant controls are, am comfortable with them and use them instinctively. I think that helps with my photography and I'm not looking for any new functions - if I had the money to pay for the film, I'd go large format ... all that lovely brass and mahogany ...

Yep, The K10d and K20d do everything I want, and do it well; so why should I want to change?

Until I can afford digital MF that is............

I have lots of cameras, but taking my 5D as my "main" camera:

Yes - I'd like much lower noise levels; I'd prefer the Bayer matrix filter to be removable for monochrome use; I'd prefer the infra-red blocking filter to eat much less of the visible red. The battery life should be longer. Ideally the camera would weigh much less and be a little more compact, but not at the expense of build quality.

I could live with a lower pixel density than my 5D's 12MP/full frame and the camera has lots and lots of functions which I will never use - like jpeg output, on-board adjustment of white balance / saturation / contrast / sharpness etc. The type S (superfine) focusing screen should be standard (it makes manual focusing much easier) and should have a grid imposed on it. There are no features which any other still or movie camera have that I require or would find useful, apart from a "sensor cleaning" function similar to that on the 40D which I find effective enough.

I'm very happy with my E3 and even more so now i have found that by selecting ISO bracketing, for the 2 exposures, I only need to press the shutter release once. My previous camera was an E1, which I still have and use, mainly because I think that is 'ergonomically' better and more compact. True there are other cameras in other formats I dream about owning, on the top of that list being an Alpa 12 with digital back ...

I'm 'mostly happy' with my Nikon D1x. The camera itself is just right - nice size and everything is placed near enough just right.. Also has 10Mp output with a small amount of interpolation (if I could find the flipping converter plugin for PSE6) The downside is the batteries are dire.. and it doesn't hold many shots before writing to the memory card. Also it's FAT 16 so the biggest card you can use us a 2Gb (enough to hold a few hundred RAW files though). Also it's Firewire not USB which is a small point I guess but when it came out Firewire was a lot faster than USB. The downsides aren't that great (apart from the dire battery life) so I can't complain all that much.

My Nikon F4E is fine as it is, does exactly what I want for a film camera. Just a pity you can't get a digital back for it

Mamiya RB67Pro-S. great camera, built like the proverbial.. only criticism is having to wind the back on separate from the body so you sometimes get the odd double/triple exposure. Big plus points? You can rotate the film back for both landscape and portrait coupled with the bellows focussing for close up capability.

I am on the whole very happy with the output quality of my APS-C sensor digital SLR.
I'm not really interested in the newest gizmos or latest fancy features, since I use my camera in a very simple way 99.9% of the time. So that wouldn't be my main reason for updating. My now ageing aps-c SLR is still more than comprehensive as far as features are concerned. There are more than I generally need.

The reasons why I am thinking of going full-frame, though, are:

i/ larger size of files, which will make my images more marketable (and this has to be my Number One reason)

ii/ better, larger viewfinder (the viewfinder on cropped-sensor cams are, as a whole, not that brilliant. Far too small, basically, so it's harder to assess manual focussing and harder to spot small "indesirables" that can creep into the frame)

iii/ better resolution of details and better handling of noise (generally speaking)

iv/ generally better quality lenses, and broader range of lenses (they tend to come at a cost, though, compared to lenses for aps-c SLRs)

Benji

I am very happy with anything that goes clicketyclacketypictureytakeny (that is with any camera and also with ALL my cameras) but less so with the fact that I haven't travelled and explored enough to enrich my photography more. BUT!....there's still plenty of time.

Really. I disagree. There are certainly many more expensive cameras than the ones that I own, but I cannot see anything in the market that is better than a D300 for my purpose. For what its worth I could afford a D3 and lenses to match but the functionality would be greater than what I need and the whole blooming issue would weigh far more than I am willing to lug around.
Yes I am happy with my camera but I will probably upgrade provided its successor has something worthwhile to offer provided that it is no less usable and portable.
I can think of a pocket-able accessory; a three inch screen like the one that's fitted to the back of the camera. It would plug into the camera on the ten pin connector and incorporate a remote release.

still very happy with my Fiji S5pro. It still does everything I wanted when I bought it, and does it very well

The money I have for photography gets split 2 ways; some goes into kit and some into trips to nice locations to use the kit. At the moment it's the trips that are getting the money.

I can't see me spending on kit again until Nikon bring out a replacement for the D700. I would like to move up to full frame, but not until the price drops

I'm very happy with my D200. I see no reason to upgrade to a D300 at all. I do however hanker after the full frame D700, but that will also entail upgrading most of my lenses; a very expensive operation and one I can't afford.
So that's a 'yes, mostly' from me.
