Nominate Your Favourite Kit
      #566695 - 09/11/2007 18:34

In January 2008 Amateur Photographer will announce the winners of its annual awards. At these awards we reward the best products tested in the year Jan-Dec 2007, across a wide range of categories. Winners are usually chosen by AP’s technical team, but this year I want to add a category that rewards the products readers think are the best.

I am therefore inviting you all to nominate what you think is the best product introduced since the beginning of 2007. The product could be anything from software to a tripod to a DSLR, but it must be available now – i.e. not ‘pending’

Ideally you will own the product, or will have used one enough to know that it is good – but it is allowable to nominate a product you have not actually used - but you should have read enough about it to know that it is really what you want or that it really is a first class product.

Accompany your nomination with the reasons why you think your products are so good.

This nomination period will last for two weeks from today - ending November 25. At that time the top ten most nominated products will be reintroduced as a poll for one week, so that a winner, and two places, can be found.

Happy nominations – and yes you can nominate more than one product at this stage. Shall we say a maximum of 3?

I feel disanfranchised. My favourate kit was introduced about two years ago. It's manufacture's replacement is not quite here in time and in any case will not be bought by me because its properties are of not of enough improvement to warrant an upgrade. If the D200 had been eligable then I would have voted for it. The D300 may well deserve your accolade but unfortuneately is just too late.

Canon EOS 40D - major improvements to 30D which is already a good camera
Canon EOS 1DS MkIII - 21MP - probably gives some digital backs a run for their money
Nikon D3 - Nikon's first full frame digital SLR

Pentax K10d - Capability + backwards compatibility = versatile system camera for traditionalist.
Manfrotto 785B tripod- Very easy to use and although cheap is versatile and strong enough to take a DSLR and 400mm.All the features of a more expensive tripod at a bargain basement price. The joystick head controller doesn't get in the way either, but can be easily set one-handed.
OpTech camera straps - DSLRs are a lot heavier than older 35mm cameras like the OM series etc. I was getting neckache and shoulder aches on long shoots until I switched to one of these.

Sony Alpha a700 - only the second Sony dSLR but already they have an outstanding camera which challenges the established brands.

I think this year: The new updated versions of Kodak's Portra pro col neg films. Why? useful increase in resolution/decrease in grain, natural colour or high saturation, depending on which you use and just generally better than its already very good predecessor.

Fuji Provia 400X (it was announced in 2006, but didn't become available until 2007).

Nikon D3 (I think judging by your criteria it should be OK to nominate this - available at end of November, plus AP has done a short overview).

Adobe Lightroom (I'm not sure if you tested that this year?).

James

The most useful thing that has come my way over the past 12months is the bubble level that I bought....about 3 weeks before WDC gave one away free....then another arrived through the post a few weeks ago. Its made a difference to my output and to my approach to the shot.

The only other thing I would nominate is the AP forum, apart from being entertaining and the unusual smell, I have found it(you) to be a most invaluable resource.
Not too glitzy...but credit where credit is due!

That's probably the goat - we've tried asking BigWill to put it outside when he logs on, but you know how much notice he takes of anything we say.

I'd like to nominate Nikon View NX - the browser, not Capture NX - that's great too, but wrong year.

Obviously it's primarily useful as a browser for Nikon raw files, but JPEG shooters with any maker's cameras should be able to make use of it as well. It's simply a great rapid image browser, with some really useful easy marking, grading and filtering capability, lost highlight/shadow viewing, focus point selection view (for NEF files), basic raw tweaking (ditto), etc. - all in all a much improved version of Nikon View. And best of all, it's free - although that might technically just be for registered Nikon owners. I think anyone can get it from the US Nikon site though.

My favourite kit,

Dakine Sequence Photo Backpack, (Ideal size for me, proper hip-belt, Loads of space for non-photographic items)

Velbon Sherpa Pro CF-631EL tripod, (really light, stable)

The Olympus E-3, don't own it, haven't tried it, but I've ordered it. A massive step forward from the E-1 which itself has met my needs in everyway.

Don't despair the D300 was introduced this year so it is eligible. Look out for its test coming up soon - Dec 8th issue I think...I've been allowed home for the weekend so I can't check the date

Does this count as a commercial post? And who said you could leave the office?

I was going to say 'you can take the girl out of the office...' but would end up being inappropriate.

It has got to be in body stabilisation and in particular the E510 which has upgraded all my lenses and opened up a whole new dimension where photography was previously impossible.

Possibly the best camera in the world....(according to the critics )

I feel I can only nominate items I have bought and which I really rate. There are only two which I think were introduced in 2007:

my Jobo 80Gb GigaVu PRO
and my Nikon AF-S 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED VR Micro

Clive

If I can think of a third one I shall add it later.

But how can I nominate something that I have never used?
That is not an invitation to lend me one for an article; that would just be too embarrasing if I could not come up with the publishable results

Thanks Clive, I had forgotten that the 105VR was announced this year.
I second the 105VR Micro Nikkor. As I have said elsewhere I forgive the bulk, weight and cost for the quality.
