My husband has a Chinon CM-1 35mm camera he's used for years (obviously) and he needs a new screw thread lens for it. My son wants to use it for a photography class next year. We've gone to various photography stores and no one has been helpful. They don't know where to find screw thread lenses.
Interestingly enough, approx. 15 years ago, my mother found a zoom lens which fit this camera and he got it as a gift. It is a Promaster SP Zoom 1:45 f=80-200mm. The lens we are looking for is the normal lens, 1:17 f=55mm. (I have extensively searched online for this item to no avail.)
Are there any other lenses that are compatible to this camera? Or is there any sort of adapter that can be used to fit a different kind of lens onto it?
Or, should we just look to buy a used 35mm camera (rather than just the lens)? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Your Chinon CM-1 takes the once ubiquitous M42 Praktica/Pentax thread lenses. Zillions were made over several decades. Any good camera shop dealing with second-hand equipment should be able to find you something. Alternatively there is a huge number of these for sale on eBay, but don't search for Chinon - search for M42 lenses or Praktica/Pentax lenses.

As he says!
The Pentax Super Takumars and the multicoated versions of these are particularly good. The 55mm was made in f2 and f1.8 variants. There was also a 50mm f1.4.

Yes, M42 SMC Auto Takumars. The prime lenses are good. I have the 50mm f1.4, 28,105,135 and 300. Also a 50mm macro. The 300 is not as well colour corrected as a modern 300mm.The macro is very deeply recessed and is difficult to use at 1:1 because there is not enough space to light the subject. The 28, 50, and 105 are all sharper, faster and draw better than the near current 24-120 Nikkor AF D. What they lack is conveniance. I suggest that you don't build a complete system because your son my well quickly want something more modern. He may find a certain amount of derision from members of his class for turning up with such old gear. That would be an ignorant and cruel reaction. The M42 SMCs were professional lenses in their day and are capabable of exploiting modern emulsions to the full. Unfortuneatly most of the old M42 Pentax cameras have broken meters and parts are not available. If the Chinon breaks down and is unrepairable then the only current replacement would be the Voigtlander Bessaflex. I have to admit that I am now fully committed to digital Nikon equipment after an interval of using Nikon film cameras, but I still have an attachment to the old Pentax kit which I used for about seven years while working and travelling in East Africa.
