I've recently acquired a C330 with an 80mm 2.8 lens. Various websites say the filter thread is 46mm, but on the back of the lens cap it says 48mm. Which is it?

Couldn't you just put a ruler across it to check? Anyway, it's 46mm. The cap doesn't fit in the the filter thread - it fits around the outside, which is obviously a different size.

Cheers Huw, I'm not sure how precise I'd be with a ruler.

Mamiya (bless 'em) made all the lenses with the same thread so you only needed one set of filters. Genius. The only exception I know of is the 250mm, which is a bigger thread (49mm).

55mm, 80mm, 105mm and 135mm take 46mm filters. 65mm,super 180mm and 250mm take 49mm filters

Shame that doesn't apply to the 645 too. The 35 m lens takes a 77 mm filter, but most others are smaller.

Indeed. 58mm, from memory, at least the 210 and 55.

It's not quite that simple I'm afraid Nick:
The 55 mm f2.8, 80 mm f2.8 and 150 mm f3.5 lenses do indeed have 58 mm threads.
The 45 mm has a 67 mm thread, and the 35 mm has a 77 mm thread - but that is a fairly wide angle lens.
I don' know about the others off hand.

Can't recall what the 70mm LS lens has, either.
My set is 35, 55, 70, 210 - but it's 18 months since I last used the system seriously.

I once had a Pentacon 6 and the 180mm f2.8 Olympia Sonnar lens, it took 86mm filters, and becaust of the huge cost, had to console myself with the fact that if they got scratched I could always use them as soup plates

I consider myself very lucky: SWMBO bought me a Lee ND Grad filter set and 105 mm polariser for my MF kit, so I can use one filter on every lens.
However, I find that using Velvia and ND grads a polariser is rarely required. Polarisers also create unwanted effects when used with very wide angle lenses.
