Mamiya TLR grips
      #574650 - 27/11/2007 00:42

Always shoot my C330's on a tripod (slow film Junkie). Recently, did some hand held portraits for friends. Humbling experience. Missed focus on half my shots as I juggled wind-on, change hold, focus-shoot, change hold, etc.
Now I need to do some more portraits (for folks who saw the last ones), AND, I want to shoot some street stuff. Well, once upon a time they used speedgraphics and MPP's, so why not my Mamiya?? I know there are left hand grips, and flash grips, and pistol grips. Who has used any of them? Do they help? Any best avoided??
(P.S.- Yes, I know, use a 35mm rangefinder, but humour me.)

I use the Mamiya trigger grip and I wouldn't use my C330f hand-held without it. 99% of my MF work is hand-held and the trigger grip improves handling no end.

I used this version when I had the prism attached. It doesn't include a trigger but still made hand holding a lot easier. I prefered not to use the grip when using the waist level finder.

Hello Skellum:
I've 'Speed' & 'Crown'Graphics, ideal for press work, although the brain must be in top form to check rangefinder, cock shutter and change slide,or wind on film, whichever the case.
But returning to,pistol grips.I find using one on a Rolleiflex for instance can prove a nuisance if using more than one film & in a rush. The same with a tripod, unless using a quick removable head.

But in this case, you need a 'film changer' on the touch line to hand you the next camera (like in the David Bailey movies of him at work in the 1960's),while you unclip the current Rollei you are using.

Moral of story, using one film,fine..in a rush, the pistol grip must be unclipped from base to get at chamber to load.

I tried grips but never really got on with them on my C330, I tended to make sure the neck strap was the right length for it to be hanging from that quite nice and tense, slightly cradled in my left hand and right hand for using the controls.

Hmm.. thanks guys. The pistol grip just looks . .well, odd. Reasonably heavy camera perched on TOP of the grip? How can that be right?? I guess you've gotta try it.
The left grip looks more interesting, especially if I can track down one with the trigger release.
Now, graflepix- you shoot Speed-graphics?? This is something I've been seriously thinking about trying. Might have some questions for you, if you don't mind. I love the idea of hand-held LF!

The Stroboframe L Grip, is pretty good. It allows the user to mount the flash on the built in hot shoe highly recommended for portraits, but the price is steep. Bargains can be found used.

Soz, This is the grip I've got(not the one that sits under the camera.) Mine also has an ideally situated flash shoe.

I use the Mamiya L grip with trigger release, it enables you to hold the camera and release the shutter with your left hand and, support it underneath with your right, enabling you to remove the right hand to wind on and focus. I would recommend this grip its worked for me for over twenty years.
I think it was the same grip for the RB 67, and could still be available new, if not there must be a few around second hand.
