I am having increasing difficulty using this as I cannot get beyond half of it showing black whatever angle I view at. This is with both waistlevel and prism finders and all lenses; I suspect my ageing eyes. Any suggestions?

Hmmm, ISTR with Oly OM screens you got this sort of problem if the lenses were slower than the split screen was designed to cope with. Something to do with the critical angle for internal reflection in the prisms. Not that this helps you if you only have slow lenses ... If it used to work with your lens but doesn't now, stupid question, but have you checked that the iris mechanism is actually opening fully?

As Beejaybee says, maximum aperture can be an issue, although most split-image rangefinder spots don't begin to black up until about f/5.6 or so, which ought to be fine for most lenses. Check that your eye is centrally positioned too though.
Of course, some might suggest that on medium format split-image screens are for wimps anyway.  ;-)

That's silly; it's 6x6 SLRs that are for wimps, real men use 6x7s.

Damn, thats my manhood impugned again.
I tried 6x7 but couldn't get it into my Prada handbag 
None of the 'Blad lenses are superfast so I am not sure that this is an issue (I do remember the problem cropping up with both OM1n and OM2n though)
I will have to try ground glass again I think but like a complete dipstick I swapped mine for the split screen.

Is this with the standard 80mm lens on? That's only f2.8 IIRC without checking. Have had the ring blackout on 35mm cameras when I've added 2x converters - don't have one on the Blad though, just have one of them bright jobbies and that's good enough for my knackered eyes with a PME prism on.

Indeed Rhys, 50mm,80mm and 150mm lenses all show the same blackout. Is that Beattie screen you have?

Nope, just an Acute Matte D jobbie - came as standard on the 503CW. I have to adjust the ASA setting on my PME meter prism as the screen is a stop brighter than the standard one (the older 500c/m series had these) the prism is calibrated to.
Does the split prism black out when the 80mm lens is wide open?
You can pick up the older used screens for about a tenner if you need another. Beattie screens are about 3 stops brighter (have just had a look on the Morco website) but cost a fair bit - £235 for the 500 series and £258 for the 503
