Hi,
I'm in the process of building up a Large Format kit. Have my camera, DDSs, a couple of lenses, etc..
What I'm now looking for is a decent loupe or lupe, depending on your persuasion. I really fancy an older-type black metal Schneider x6 lupe. Don't ask me why. Simply, I just liked the look of it. (A woman thing??) Recently missed out on one which was up for sale on THAT ubiquitous auction site.
Thoughts, ideas and suggestions greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Carol

I have a Silvestri 6x loupe which I got from www.morco.uk.com It's bright and sharp and (overall) I love it. No, it won't get into the corners of the ground glass, but if you MUST they also make a tilting version. Highly reccommended.

Did you think of buying a 50mm/f1.8 lens intended for a 35mm SLR and using that with a home-brew skirt? A "junk" one with a broken aperture control would be OK and you should be able to get one for peanuts compared with what a "genuine" loupe will cost you.

After a few years of leaving lupes on jobs - I got half a dozen x10 (I think) Agfalupes - roughened up the outside of the clear skirt & sprayed it black. tied a bit of string round it, job done.
-------------------- Argue your limitations & sure enough they're yours.

My loupe is from Wista for no better reason than the camera I was buying at the same time was a Wista. However, it seems well made and does the job.
The thing is, with a loupe for use with a large format camera, not any old loupe will do. For example, a loupe for viewing slides on a light box will be designed to focus on the plane of the film which will be at the end of the loupe. For focusing a large format camera the loupe will need to focus on the ground side of the focusing screen which will be the thickness of the glass beyond the end of the loupe. Some focusing provision in the loupe itself is also useful so that one can make diopter adjustments for eyesight.
