Delta 3200 on MF
      #601410 - 25/01/2008 13:52

Used 32000 recently on 35mm and obviously it was grainy, how grainy would it be on mf though?

If you could do anything tommorrow what would it be?

6x6 is about 4 times more area, so a 10x8 print from mf would have about as much grain as a 6x4 from 35mm.

Try shooting it at 1600 instead of 3200.

If you developed it with the same recipe & timings, then took a 35mm sized crop and printed it at the same size as your 35mm example, it would look the same.

Normally you would enlarge from MF film only about half as much as you would enlarge from 35mm, in which case the grain would appear half the size.

Yes, but the usable area on a 10x8 print would actually be closer to the ratio of a 645 format, about 2.7x larger. I have in the distant past, used the long discontinued Kodak Royal-X Pan rollfilm, which was rated at 1250 asa in a Mamiya 645. The results from this were better than from a 35mm camera using Tri-X rated at 400 asa. Before anyone comments that it is iso, it wasn't then!

I have shot 3200 in MF, and developed it in DDX. It isn't as grainy as you might expect. I'm just about to go out, but when I get back, I'll scan in a neg and post it for you to see, so you can make your own mind up.

It depends to a degree on which medium format. I use 6 x 7, which fits nicely onto 8 x 10 paper and gives far less grain. 6 x 4.5 would obviously be a bit more grainy; 6 x 9 would be less so, if printed full neg, rather than cropped to fill the paper. 6 x 6 would be about the same, again if printed square rather than to fill the paper.

I don't use 3,200 much, but find that Delta 400 on 6 x 7 gives much better grain than Delta 100 on 35mm printed to the same size.

Thanks guys, just processed a roll set at 1600 and so far so good. Used DDX too so that must have helped
