Great location, on Gunwharf Quays near docks at Portsmouth.

Great lines, good viewing platform, great views.

Have they finished building it yet? Do the lifts work?

Is the same company building the Olympic stadia for 2012?

Yes it is finished. The inside lift worked when I visited in March, but they were still awaiting final clearance on the outside lift. And AGW, yes it has a roof and three floors, one of which is partially glass. The views are fantastic, they give a new perspective on the Portsmouth Harbour area.

Watch out for the green tinted glass if you want to shoot out from the viewing areas... found that out with the Sony R1 test!

Yes - I had to do some serious white-balancing acts after my visit. Happily I always shoot RAW, so it was no bother once I'd found the right setting.

As for the lift, I don't know why that's such a problem - I guess it must be more complex than your average lift. There were two guys working on it when I was there, so they're definitely trying.

But I'll give a hearty thumbs-up for the Spinnaker Tower - I know milennium projects years behind schedule are a standing joke, but it's a really beautiful tower, and well worth a visit. Catch it in the early morning or late afternoon sunshine, if you can.

These pictures from my visit last November:

I think the Tricorn went some time ago. I'm not sure what they are doing/did instead.

Not sure it's that much of an improvement.

Thanks Chris - it was one of those situations though, where the light was so good it would have been difficult not to get something good. :-)

Good picture though - I can't imagine me saying that about one of the old Tricorn. Admittedly I only saw it on the box whenever the local news did a story about how hideous it was, or subsequently when they were actually knocking it down, but it did look pretty awful.

The same guy who did the Tricorn also did a local some local flats, I think. Always wanted to photo it, its ugly but in an appealing way. I think in this day and age people are quick to blame a buildings aesthetics as the cause of crime and disorder.

Thanks Huw.

For most of it's existence it was pretty awful. Inside where the shops were meant to be it was always gloomy and dank, even on a hot summers day and the outside - once shiny and clean when the concrete was fresh - existed in assorted shades of dirty grey enlivened only by the odd streak of iron oxide red where the reinforcing bars were rusting.

Mind you to be fair to the engineers and builders who put it up it proved an absolute bastard to bring down............

There is already outline permission for a major new development, mostly shops, to replace the Tricorn. It is currently known as "City Centre North".

To update anyone interested in the situation, the area formerly occupied by the Tricorn centre is being redeveloped into the 'Northern Quarter' an addition to the city centre shopping area.
