Father Christmas delivered a Canon EOS 400D to me this year... having been away from SLR photography for over 10 years!!!
Obviously a little rusty and would like to ask if anyone knows any great places in Hertfordshire (architecture/ landscape etc) where I can go and test my skills and get some great shots to add to my rather dusty portfolio?
Thanks

Well, he could have brought you a new one!
Welcome to the forum.
Ashridge is always good. Best time for me is Autumn, but now would be a good time for some mono landscapes.

The rape fields around Hitchin are great in season. Saint Albans has some nice locations (and, crucially, pubs).

Indeed, Ye Old Fighting Cocks - Reputedly the oldest pub in Britain, although there are a number of pubs which make this claim!

I would visit some of the small villages ie Colliers end, Cold Christmas etc Just off the A10 where the new bypass is. The houses around that area are in the region of 400 years old, they all lean and tilt. There is also a very old church in Colliers End fabulous old scrap yard, worth taking a few pics of the owner, bit of a relic himself. In general the countryside around that area is beautiful.
P.S If you are hungry at the end of your shoot you can get a fantastic curry in "Raj Villa" Or a good Chinese meal in the "Lamb and Flag" Good luck where ever you take your pictures.

Thanks for all your recommendations... I live in Hertford so the locations mentioned aren't too far to travel
Went for a stroll around Hertford yesterday morning but struggled to get inspiration, no doubt the bug will bite me again soon!
I'll let you know how I get on and upload my pics onto a Flickr account soon!
Thanks Again!

Just thought of some more. Audley End House which actually borders with Essex beautiful, Knebworth house "wow" and the grounds I have some lovely shots of my visit there in the summer, granted everything "seems " to look better when the sun is shining, St Andrews St, busy but great buildings and behind the Civic Hall you have the moat and the ruins of the old castle.

Ah the beautiful river Lea, I have my own footpath along there. I'd forgotten about that, a true haven for photographers no matter what the weather.

The old Bluecoats School buildings (IIRC)? Must be good for some architectural shots
My wife actually works in one of the old buildings in Bluecoats, having visited her office all the old features inside the buildings seem to have been modernised which is a shame really although they have an awesome original stain glass window on the stair way...
on another note i've been trying out the RAW features on my camera but when i try to view them on my PC, I can't seem to view the image until I open it up in CS2, is there an easier way to view RAW images (thumbnails) so i can view all shots prior to opening them?
Help is much appreciated!

I'm a St Albans resident - great place. The Abbey is good as is my old school next to it (almost as old!). The Fighters, yes, beautiful building. It is the oldest SITE of an inn in the country - the current building unfortunately isn't the oldest continuously used pub in the land but it's lovely and the food is cracking.
There is a derelict priory - I forget the name, but it's near Prospect Road and would turn up on a decent internet search - that's a good place to shoot.

Yeh, but they tend to move around, as rape isn't planted on the same field two years running, and some fields are undoubtedly more photogenic than others!
Pegsdon Hills has some nice views (its officially just over the border in Beds, but we won't charge entry to a 'foreigner' from Herts.

Theres some lovely places in herts (and on the borders with beds) to go; Personally I like Dunstable downs, sitting on top of the hill is an excellent place to sit and take photos of the gliders. Its also near whipsnade zoo and ashridge forest which provides a good walk around, and given the correct route will give you a view of Tring windmill.
The windmill is a much better beast to photograph up close when the weather is moody and there are lots of grey clouds in the sky.
Drive for long enough around the area and you'll also find a good traditional canal boat scene to photograph, next to a traditional pub.

Ooo, I'm nostalgic about home now! I'm from Hitchin . Perhaps the old buildings there for architecture, the Corn exchange and the Sun Hotel are lovely. Also, the back roads - Sun Street and Bucklesbury. I remember once they looked fabulous in the snow a few years back. Also, though in Bedfordshire (I think), the hills around Barten-le-clay.
Have fun! I shall have to explore the other side of Hertfordshire one day.
