I'm going to Northumberland for a week from Friday onwards and will be staying in Beadnell, not far from Seahouses.

What are the area's must shoots? Not just early morning/sunset landscapes please, but also photo ops during the day at places the wife, mother-in-law and 21 month old won't be bored too please.

There are some nice places along Hadrian's Wall, and other Roman remains.

Of course, you could just drive up across the border and have a look at Eyemouth/St Abbs Head etc, but then to be fair Northumbria's coast is quite nice too. I seem to recall you can feed seals in Eyemouth harbour (someone's made a business out of it).

I've heard there's a little known castle along the Northumbrian coast, it was tipped off in a Buchaille Etive Mor dominated thread...

Will they still be there in any number, or all out to sea?

Pretty much anywhere along the coast up there is beautiful. I'm like Amble and Druridge Bay. Low Newton is lovely too.

Alnwick is well worth a look. The castle and gardens are a superb family day out. Barter Books is a mecca for book lovers.

I like the road between Alnwick and Rothbury. There's some rugged scenery and interesting old ruins.

Can't argue with any of that. And although I mentioned Bamburgh as overphotographed, there is a good reason why it is! All the coastal castles are great.

No question - Barter Books is great on a wet day. Not cheap, though - but what a selection! I bought a couple of old photography books on my last visit.

The harbour (and kippers!) at Craster is well worth a look, and there's also the Heatherslaw Light Railway inland a bit that takes you to Etal and another castle in a bend of the Tweed, close to the site of the glorious battle of Flodden ( ).

Nobody has mentioned Lindisfarne. That's a must see IMO.

Dunstanborough Castle just south of Beadnell is an atmospheric ruin of a place and photographed only slightly less than Bamburgh, or just head in-land to the Cheviots. Very picturesque.

Thanks for all the tips. I'll certainly make the effort to go to Barter Books when in Alnwick.

I'm only into landscape photography if I'm on my own and have plenty time. You can't do it with others who aren't photographers so on this trip I won't be taking a tripod for that very reason. On our trip to Devon last year I had a grand total of 7 minutes in Clovelly harbour by the time I'd got down there!

Don't miss the famous 'Holga' harbourmaster's hut at Alnmouth, made famous by Lee Frost. I'll post a link to a snapshot shortly (when I'm not at work!)

Gallery 3 on my very amateur website is all Northumberland coast, Lindisfarne and Hadrian's wall country from November last year. A really enjoyable trip. Locations are named but I can provide details if needed!

Where are the radar 'balls' up that way. If I remember they are not far from Alwick. Could be quite unusual if your allowed up close - don't know if you are or not?

The local air force base is RAF Boulmer, which is right on the coast about 7 miles from Alnwick - you should see the rescue helicopters out and about but i am noy sure about taking photographs of the base! You may end up in the clink!

I don't think there is much to see other than the rescue helicopters. There is no runway at Boulmer from what I have seen, and it is all well above road level, so taking pix would make you a bit obvious, and liable to be interrogated.

At one time we were the forgotten corner of 'England' only known to a few 'Photgraphers' & Locals.
Now every Photomag has Bamburgh or DunstanBurgh in it, just look at what the 'Angel' of the north has don to us.

I have just thought. The scrap metal market is booming at present perhaps South Tyneside Council could sell it off and get rid of an eyesore and lower Council tax at the same time! It is hideous!

It's a fabulous sculpture. I really like it. Then again I am a fan of Gormley's stuff. Sound II at Winchester and Another Place on Crosby Beach are wonderful. The exhibition in London last spring was damn fine too.

That would be quite a trick; it's owned by Gateshead Council!
