How do I get blurred edges in a photo, but clear at the centre?
      #671325 - 26/06/2008 13:41

I have a portrait that I want to blur, other than in the centre where the subject is.

I can do this easily in Picasa (it's called soft focus) but can't find anything in PS Elements 5. Does anyone know if it's possible?

Cheers

I don't have Elements 5 but I would imagine you could make a selection around the bit you want sharp. Invert the selection (probably a right click on the image and choose from the menu or available from the drop down menu at the top), and then add some Gaussian blur with a well feathered edge.

I've got Elements 4 and don't think there's a 'one click' way of doing this. I'd use the blur tool, which looks like a water droplet on the toolbar (not the blur filter), and then 'paint' the blur you want onto the image. It seems to work quite well but it sounds like it's going to take a bit more effort than doing it in Picasa.

I was going to suggest a UV filter and a little vasaline around the edges then I remembered digital.

Could always smear vasaline on your monitor screen, I suppose!
Sorry, I have a weird sense of humour.

Thanks for everyone's replies. I think I'll just stick to Picasa for this, which is a brilliant little (and free) program for anyone who's not tried it.

You can add a vignette effect in Ele6. Starting with a new layer, filled with white, change blending to linear. Try opacity at 60% for starters. Then go to Filter > correct camera distortion and play around with the vignette slider until you get the desired effect.

But I'm in great mood tonight because the other day I entered a competition and I won a years supply of Marmite ..... one jar
