I'm currently in Antigua, Guatemala and have been taking the most uninspired shots of what to most people is without any shadow of a doubt a beautiful city. I've been using Picasa to modify images rather than use the Canon software or Photoshop elements that I had been using.
I find it is far faster to use than either of the above, it can be used for most basic fixes more easily than the above and while it lacks some flexibility in terms of options to manipulate contrast it does seem very user friendly. Would most people agree with what I state or do any of you think that I am making the most terrible or errors?

Welcome to the forum! We're all mad in here, but I'm sure you're already aware of that...

I think we're all biased in favour of what we know how to make work. If Picasa works for you, that's great, it's right for you whatever anyone else says.

Welcome.
One other point ... use Picassa if you're happy with it but remember - don't edit the original .jpg files but keep these as your 'digital negatives'. If you make changes to these and later change your mind you will have no fallback option. Make a copy of the original files and make all your edits to these and then, preferably, save your changes as .tif files (if Picassa allows it). TIF files are compressed LOSSLESSLY and repeated editing and saving will not lose image data.

My only complaint with Picasa is that it insists on loading every picture on your hard drive when first installed, instead of giving you the option of what to load

I do believe that you can tell picassa where to look for images.
I have all my images in a `Digital` folder on my c drive and that is the only place picassa is set up to look.

Yep that's correct - it's pretty flexible in beng able to tell in which folder to use of not use. Not used it for a while as have moved to lightroom but I always thought it was pretty good - and even better when you consider it's free!

I don't think Picasa does edit original files. If you export a copy it is the edited version that is exported and if you save changes a copy is saved. the original is never altered.
