Ok, so maybe they should have got a pro-photographer, but they asked me to do it....insisted actually!!
So I now have over 900 wedding pics and they are ok....composition wise etc! But some are just a bit dull and improve instantly when I use the levels tool. But if I do that to each of those needing it - it's gonna take me hours!! So how can I batch do it, without overdoing or underdoing the adjustment necessary. I sort of think I shouldnt just use the auto levels function? Do you pro guys do them one by one....doubt it somehow.
I use Breezebrowser to put them on the web and, for interest, I was using a D200 with 18-200 vr lens and auto iso (hope that doesnt make you pros lose the will to live!!)

Because you didn't charge them when a wedding photographer would've charged?

Yeah... That's one of the reasons why photographers charge a lot of money for this type of work!

No. They do spend that sort of time. It's called 'Professionalism'
You can't just batch it as each photo will be different. Grab yourself a glass (or two) of decent wine and sit and go through the photos. Hopefully you'll of shot in RAW as it'll make it easier...
But you've got some work ahead of you now. Perhaps you can talk to the newly weds to reimburse you financially for the amount of time you'll be spending.
Oh... sorry... they'd of done that if they got a Wedding Photographer to do it for them.
Sorry if I sound a bit 'off' but I hear this sort of tale again and again !

Yes, I shot RAW and I dont mind if it does takes time. Great chance to put together a portfolio.
I can and will do them individually if necessary. I was just interested to know whether pro's did 'batch process'

would imaging you won't be processing the whole lot! So the first thing is to edit them down. When I'm shooting or a models portfolio I may take 400 images, but only 20 or so will be editied. Say the 10 I like best and the 10 the model does. With a wedding you may need to pick out the best 20-30 to get good coverage of all the key bits and all the group shots.
So perhaps the thing to do would be to make a list of the final images you want: The church/registary office inside, the couple comming out, confetti being thrown, getting in the car. Then all the essential groups - bride and groom, brides family, grooms family, bride and groom + parents etc. Then may be one or two of the speeches and half a dozen candids from the reception? I have never shot a weding, so I may be a bit of on what is expected.
Remember giving them one cracking well edited shot of each "scene" will be better for them than 10 almost the same. Can you really imagine them looking through all 900, or even worse sitting down with each relation and making them look through all 900!!
Onc you have them thinned out to a sensible number I'd think about setting a schedule to do them without you getting lazy and bored. Maybe 10 per night?
You will need to go through them individually, but you may be able to save some time but grouping them into similarly lit sets and applying the same raw conversion to each before getting into the detailed work.
Depending on your editing skill level this could take a while - for portraits I reckon on between 10-30 mins per image, depending largley on how good the models skin/make-up is. Using the healing brush on blemishes can take for ever, but is essential for this kind of stuff. Don't be tempted to do any global skin softening as you'll end up with the bride looking like a plastic doll.

You don't say what software you're using to edit the pictures. If you have bought a Sandisk Extreme III card recently, you might have got a copy of Capture One RAW converter. This can do batch processing. But surely you can weed your 900 images down to, say, fifty or so? No newly-weds will expect to see a vast number of almost identical images. Pick out the best and concentrate on them. If the couple ask about other people or other pictures, you can always go back and select a few extra.

That's good advice.... I can easily pick my favourite 50 or so to cover each 'scene' and the newly weds, (when back from the Maldives), can look at the others if they wish to.
I am using Photoshop CS2 for editing, and find myself sorting through them with both Breezebrowser (shows such a big image quickly) and Bridge.

Hi
Thank you so much for this excellent advice. I like the suggestion of one cracking shot of each 'scene'. I have before the wedding shots, the rehearsal (and pub afterwards), getting ready on the day, the wedding, reception, first dance and the rest - so hours of shooting!! Hence so many images! But it wont be difficult to pick my favs and I will put the rest (those that def dont need deleting) in a separate folder for them to look at if they wish.
My Ps editing will take a bit longer no doubt, but great suggestion re 10 per night. Should get that done before they get back from honeymoon.

I downloaded a free 30 day trial of Lightroom and love it.
It enabled me to quickly sort, edit, crop, enhance and upload my wedding images and the family are delighted.
