Hi everyone,
Now that I have ordered my new machine, I am looking at buying a monitor. Having never like the Dell displays, I thought I would go for something else and am currently looking at the following for photoshop and DXO:
1.) NEC LCD2090UXi-BK 20" Professional LCD Monitor 2.) VIEWSONIC VP2250WB 22" Widescreen Professional LCD 3.) SAMSUNG 204B 20" PRO LCD 5MS PRO MONITOR
I like the SAMSUNG XL20 20" Professional Photographic Monitor, but think it is out of my price range and Eizo's are just way out of my budget.
Anyone got any other suggestions or comments on the above list ? Any recommendations ?
Thanks
James

I posed a similar question a few months back, and the general consensus was that the Dell 2408WSFP Ultrasharp was a pretty good choice. I know you said that you don't like Dell, but I suspect that above this you are into diminishing returns, eg JVC do a very nice broadcast 24" monitor at £3400 exc vat! Dave

Being as you're in Melbourne, have a look at LG's range.
They make stuff for lots of other brands. Also, LG stuff is made in Australia so you won't have to pay the extra taxes.

I have an Iiyama Vision Master Pro 510 - a CRT. I heard that if you are going to use your monitor for photos you need a CRT! I have had the 510 for quite some time but I do get good results with C1 LE and CS2. I would love a more light weight screen but do the LCD's work?

I disagree, I have the 23" Apple HD Cinema screen, and love the facts a)it works, b) I have so much more desk space to fill with $h!t.

I have the DELL 20" Ultrasharp and run it at maximum resolution. I profiled it recently, but there was virtually no change to the display, the DELL driver being pretty good to start with.
I checked with DELL techical and it displays 90% of tha adobe RGB gamut, which is great considering the price. If I convert an AdobeRGB image to sRGB I can easily see the changes to the colours as it is remapped.
I would recommend it without doubt for photography. I also use it for AutoCAD and the graphics are pin sharp with shallow angle diagonal lines clearly displayed. There is no apparent difference in line widths between Vertical and horizontal lines, as can be seen on some CRT displays.

i just got a samsung 19" syncmaster 940mw (1440x900) this afternoon, was my brothers old screen, and from just mucking about with it today the images are just so sharp in comparison to my little macbook which is plugged into it. this is my first proper monitor so this could just be what every screen looks like but IMHO its the best res screen i've seen.
linky to pic of my setup, not sure if its helpful at all, but you can see the clarity between them

I agree about the Apple as I have the 30". However, the Dell gets great reviews so one could save money at the price of it not looking quite as nice.

Well after a lot of surfing and reading of reviews and measuring my desk, I have decided to go for the Viewsonic Pro VP2250WB. The dell was a bit out of my price range and too big to fit on my desk. Additionally I read that it is not the most colour accurate monitor and I'm more interested in that than watching HD movies or games.
So once it arrives and I calibrate it, I'll let you know what I think.

Surely, once you calibrate any monitor it is colour correct? That is the sole purpose of calibration I thought.

It depends on how well you can calibrate it. Some screens are better than others.
