Large format negatives & glass plates (negatives)
      #568577 - 13/11/2007 20:15

I have been asked to find out whether it is possible or even advisable, to clean glass plates and film prior to their archival. I would not have thought that there would be a problem with the non-emulsion side of the glass if cleaned with care but I am not so sure if the emulsion surface should be touched even if there is evidence of mould. If members have had experience of this I would be glad to hear of techniques and materials. I would suggest that every negative should be scanned prior to any action.
I presume that film, if in good condition, could be re-washed.

Sounds like a sensible precaution to me.

I don't see why plates should be more vulnerable than film (in the same condition) - in particular if re-washing film is considered an acceptable risk, I don't see any reason why plates shouldn't be re-washed too. After all, plates underwent the same sort of wet processing as film.

In my (limited!) experience, emulsion can very easily lift off the plate and slide away, so be careful! Don't use warm water, for a start...

It might well be worth asking the question of the National Media Museum or the RPS...

My thanks to all who have replied. I have sent messages to both the Media Museum and the V&A,
