E 520 viewfinder question
      #691346 - 14/08/2008 21:39

I am looking to upgrade to a dslr and I am thinking about a E 520 but may not have chance to have a look at one in a shop. Reading a review recently the viewfinder was described as very small.
Is this a problem?
Do most owners use live view?
Does live view slow things down a lot (I need quick focussing for wildlife)?

Live view can be very good for still life but I personally wouldn't try it for wild-life (unless your into taking pics of a sleeping dog or a bit of road kill ) The viewfinder is fine in my opinion but like all these things you really ought to try them in a shop. Don't forget that Oly uses the 4/3rds system which means the pics it takes are slightly squarer than 3:2 formats from Canon and Nikon. That makes the viewfinder experience a little different. If you're spending £500 or so then try to make an effort to visit your local camera store and try them out.

Thanks, you have confirmed my doubts about live view, there are no 520 in stock locally at the moment so my decision will be delayed until I can get hands on.

Liveview is available on many entry level dslr's and many would say it's just a sop to people upgrading from compacts because that is in essence what they are used to. You will find that you will use the viewfinder far more with a dslr which is why you need to be comfortable with it.

There may be an alternative camera shop near you. You should be able to find an Olympus dealer here

Any Oly finder should give you a general idea of size...

Similar negative comments get bandied about concerning APS-C format finders but in truth you adapt fairly quickly and rapidly stop noticing the 'problems' of smaller finders. Can be a bit trickier though if, like me, you occasionally take out a film camera - then you get an idea of how small the digital finder is... OTOH as a specs wearer I find it much easier to see all the information available with the digital version - when I remember to look that is.......

Fantastic, found a shop not too far away, going next week, can't wait to get hands on and get playing.

Incidentally, when you go see the dealer it might be worth your while seeing if they've got an E-510 and checking that out. There is not a huge difference between the two models but it might be that the dealer can 'do you a good deal' on the 510. It may be a chance to try out your bargaining skills because I would imagine most dealers would be quite keen to get rid of them now the 520 is out

Thanks for all your advice, I had a good time in the shop and finally chose a Samsung GX-10. Bigger and heavier - but it felt right.

Enjoy your new camera

The shop probably told you that the Samsung GX10 is exactly the same as a Pentax K10 so you can use Pentax lens's etc.

Just as important is that our friends on the Pentax forum will no doubt be able to help you with any questions you may have whilst you're getting up and running.

Good luck
