Rumour

As sweetness and light has broken out here I thought that I would post a link to a totaly unfounded rumour

Why would they do that?

Just to get a square image?

I personally don't see much point in going to the trouble to make a sensor that has a larger area than the current one if you can't actually make use of the extra area, half the area of the sensor would be unused regardless of what format you decided on.

Maybe I'm completely missing the point

Sounds too sensible to be true

Why not go the whole hog and have a circular sensor - making full use of the image circle? At least it would help get rid of those awkward "petal" lens hoods!

It's an interesting rumour if nothing else. Wouldn't a square format (18mmx18mm) give near APS mm2 while being compatible with the existing E-system and lenses?

One advantage of a rumour is that one is unconstrained by pesky facts so I assume that the full image would be available for PP (at least in raw).

Personally I want one because

A. With many grabbed shots where there is only just time to raise a camera - let alone decide on format.

B. On camera flash just looks odd with a vertical camera position.

C. I have very sensitive skin so I never go outside without a broad brimmed hat - and for portrait shots I need to take the hat off! As I result I tend to mostly use landscape and rely on cropping later.

D. Some shots just need either a square or very exaggerated landscape format and for these these the format would be ideal

As a fan of the square format, I certainly think it's interesting. I'll have this shape sensor in my sub-4xx size body, please.

Interesting thought:

It would be difficult to do this kind of multiple format camera without an electronic viewfinder, and who has just announced a new system with an EVF?
