In 1970, the World Exposition was held in Osaka in Japan and as part of the event, two time capsules were filled with objects representing the life and technology of the day. The capsules were sealed and buried and one was to remain undisturbed for 5000 years, while the other was to be checked on in 30 years and 100 years after that. The objects placed in the capsules included an Olympus Pen FT which was found to be in perfect working order when one of the capsules was opened and resealed in 2000*. It is almost impossible to imagine what people will make of this camera when the capsule is next opened in 2100, let alone in 5000 years time! In the three decades since the capsules were originally buried, camera technology has progressed at an almost unimaginable pace. Perhaps in 2100, they will put another camera in the time capsule to keep the Pen FT company, but what on earth would it be like?
My vision for 100 years from now is of a tiny camera, worn almost like a piece of jewellery, say a ring or necklace. Being so small, it will of course be an Oly as Canon will have gone out of business, having been left behind in the race for smaller sensors. It will 'talk' wirelessly to the viewfinder which will be either a contact lens inserted in the eye, or a pair of sleek glasses, where one of the lenses will become the viewfinder when switched on. Camera lens focal length will be automatically adjusted by the action of the eye (squint for zoom, open wide for wide angle), but I don't know how the shutter would be triggered. Pictures taken could be viewed in 3d via the two lenses in the glasses (though walking while doing so would not be advisable!) Got any ideas for the shutter? A twitch of the nose perhaps, or via speech - "snap". No, kids would walk past you shouting "snap, snap, snap..." and fill your memory card. Although that won't be a problem as the memory card will probably hold 30,000 football-pitch sized pictures (good grief, how will we print them?)! Oh my imagination is running away...

I watched a program a few weeks ago and in the future a lifetimes experiences will be recorded in the size of a grain of sand. Perhaps SLR cameras will not exist and all our images will come from video?

We won't need cameras in the future as we will be able to teleport through time and space to anywhere at any time by just thinking about it 
How to trigger the shutter on cameras that are unusably small? I'd have thought Oly were the experts there 
.....although....since this camera in the future is an Oly blowing it kisses might be an intuitive way to some for triggering the shutter

What a jolly good idea too as everyone walking past could just blow a kiss at you and your camera would be activated and filled with pictures of people blowing kisses. What a nice world it would be.
Actually, it's not beyond the realms of possibility that some present day gear, could still be working in 2100, especially Canon L series lenses as they are rather finely built. But the digital bodies will be obsolete as no doubt some new technology will have taken over.

Well I guess if you can get smile detection a kiss detection mode might be possible too 
Then again maybe by 2100 the camera will recognise perfect pics all by itself and just beep to let you know when to look

Sadly, I suspect that's probably a very insightful prediction.
In fact, you probably won't even need a camera; you'll just visit Google-Photo-Earth which will contain every conceivable photo from every possible angle and lighting conditions on earth.
Watch out AP, you've just entered your last century! We're all DOOMED Captain Manwaring.

.... an OM1 style viewfinder which not only shows you what you need to take the perfect picture - including an automatic 'talent' setting to ensure stunning composition, exposure, focus - but also a link to the Bank of England's economic forecasters to flash up warnings of doom to you as you shoot.

I certainly think that's one future, and it's one I would expect Olympus to be well-placed to develop. The key is always keeping the controls usable. I have a Pentax Auto 110, a pocketable SLR, and it gets round the control issue by not having any, which isn't really ideal.

I think my camera has one of those 'talent' settings  They also work for things other than street candids....
Wonder if they can figure out a blush and hair flick detector too?
(I know it's a "wee bit" blurry...it's because it wasn't taken on an Oly )

Isn't that what the P in PASM is all about.
Personally, I keep wondering how cheaply a metal bodied, light sealed, 4 shutter speed and proper focal distance marked lens Holga could be sold for. I reckon it'd still be a bargain., if not quite Zuiko in the edges/corners of the frame.

I think by 2100 the nanny state will have banned all forms of photography.
Know as the Photobition, addicts will become known as 'Foxtalbots' and forced underground to get their fixes. Electronic photography will not be possible as the state will be able to detect electronic emissions, and the manipulation of any imagery via computer monitored by the 'New Labour Spin-Doctor-Web', so cameras will be hand made items, crafted with passion, simple large format style units that can be dismantled and disguised as other items for ease of transport, and the medium of recording the image will be sensitised paper fixed with common salt.
Others will dabble like alchemists, to produce potions that will allow images to be recorded on other materials such as glass and plastic. And a secret sect known only as the 'Silver Halides' will develop an amazing process using silver halides, allowing lifelike images to be formed on a celluloid base. This process will allow incredible lifelike imagery to be stored in celluloid format, but the creation of such imagery will require great skill, images cannot simply be produced or amended electronically.

All we'll be allowed is a bit of burnt stick and some recycled paper.
Oh............no............. scratch that............burning bits of stick will have long been banned/taxed out of existence on environmental grounds......
