A bit quiet on here..here...here....here........ here.............here
      #658072 - 22/05/2008 11:47

No posts for a while.

Anyway, I've ordered the 70-300mm from Campkins cameras, a good price, but out of stock at the moment, so a little frustration as I won't have it for my camping trip to Robinhoods bay next week!

No problem though, and the wait is worth the saving! It was £249.99 + £2 postage, so can't complain as it' full UK stock too!

Thanks

My excuse is that I've just been busy, well that's part of it anyway.

To be honest I've just got totally fed up with the fanboys of other brands coming in here and causing unwanted friction. I've got so fed up in fact that I've not bothered to buy a copy of AP since, and I suspect I might not again, so I hope the AP magazine/forum staff are pleased with themselves.

Ditto.

To be fair some of the Forum staff (Nick/Huw/Fen) did deal with Trolls if they were made aware of them.

How so?

as far as the various brand sections of the forum are concerned apart from one post in the Canon section all his posts are in the Olympus section.

OK - it's GCSE communications time:

Question 1. Should ALL brand forums on the AP site be scrapped as irrelevant? Give at least three reasons for your answer.

Question 2. On any branded forum - should those 'maintaining' it be, if not actively partisan to the brand, at least not frequently and consistently dismissive of both the brand and its supporters? Discuss.

It's marketing that causes most of the problematic sentiment which people get caught up in. It is, after all, a highly competitive market and manufacturer's sell on a "this is better than that" basis. If we each didn't believe that about our chosen brand, we wouldn't be buying the cameras we do. For some people, this kind of brainwashing spills over into an all consuming mission of destruction against anything perceieved as a slur or competition against their chosen brand/tribe. It is tribalism at its worst and the relative anonymity of the internet makes it worse. Put a load of different brand owners in a real room, and the brand rivalry will climb no higher than playful banter. Put the same people in an internet forum, and they can end up wanting to kill each other! Perhaps we can call it net-rage. To prove my point that marketing is responsible, if you take it out of the equation, the rage vanishes. Try classic/vintage camera brand forums where people are discussing cameras long abandoned by competing manufacturers, and you will generally find pleasant people all getting along fine and happy to help one another.

Marketing is designed to conjur up selfish feelings, irrespective of the fallout. As anyone in the business will tell you, "You" is the most important word in advertising.

Sorry examiner, I wandered off the questions a bit there.

Thankfully...

1) I've seen no more in the way of real stupidity from other brand fanboys in here than vice versa and as you said the mods have dealt with the real trolls pretty sharply...

2) The way LM wrote his post is more than a bit fanboy-ish in it's own right - as indeed have been many previous posts where any criticism of Oly seems to be treated almost as a personal affront. Perhaps more a case of not seeing the beam in one's own eye then?...

Probably there is a case for not having brand specific areas. i feel that such a situation would mitigate against the self reinforcing nature of brand centred obsession. It's harder to become a fanboy in the face of overwhelming opposition.

On he other hand having brand specific areas does make it a lot easier to find opinions (accurate or not), help and information about your particular make/model. Of course that doesn't necessarily mean that you won't find stuff from opinionated generalists there as well (who?....moi! ).

If by 'maintaining' you mean the normal occupations of a moderator then I'd say I don't think so. The art of moderation should be to ensure that balance is the norm. Those who are overly partisan for the brand need to be held in check just as much as those who are pointlessly negative - the danger of an overly partisan management system is that the forum becomes dangerously one sided and brand obsession becomes an unregulated self-defeating monster...

The weather was atrocious nearly all week. I think I have a few ok pictures, but most are a bit dull.

It's lovely round Whitby and Robinhoods bay, but when you're in a tent and it's blowing a gale and windy, it can be a bit grim!

You ain't kidding. When we did the Coast to Coast walk back in 1990, we could've finished a day earlier, but thought we would stop at Hawsker, do some washing, and stroll into Baytown in a leaisurely fashion in the morning. We hadn't reckoned with strong winds and torrential rain combining to soak everything in the tent, and it still being grim in the morning. D'oh!

Fingers crossed for you. The one advantage was that it kept the crowds to a minimum and it was more pleasurable walkign around Whitby than when it's heaving!

You missed my few posts regarding cleaning glass plate negs and the other few posts in the classic camera section discussing Exas and the merits of 300mm Prinz Galaxy lenses...!

On a more serious note I see the same old attitudes still seem to be very much prevalent, as if Olympus DSLRs owners are not worthy of association with AP.

I see my one post to the Canon section being used to suggest, indeed used to propgate the suggestion even, that I was actually stirring a flame war in there. Now why would someone do that?

Especially when in fact I was recommending that a poster wanting to buy a Canon 5D should try DigitalDepot to source one. If I'd know then what I know now, I wouldn't have even wasted my time pressing the keys to help another photographer, regardless of it's brand kudos.

So if this is 'forum moderation' AP-style, then AP and indeed it's owning publishing house can completely forget about any future custom from me. As it happens I'm also a subscriber to MiniWorld magazine, so no prizes what will be happening to my subscription renewal, it won't be getting renewed.

Can someone explain why I would, let alone why should, buy AP ever again, or visit this forum?

I'm sure if Canon owners suffered what we have to put up with in here there would have been an uproar by now.
