Lens recycling

I've had my af-s 70-200mm f2.8 vr lens for about 9 months, and whilst on holiday last week during a rainy afternoon in the caravan, to help with the bordom i started playing with the lens, i noticed what looked like a 10 year recycling symbol on the underside of the lens. Can any of you guys n dolls throw any light on this.
