I checked my manual...and went through the menu but I thought I'd ask to make sure. My D70 "rolled over" the 9,999 picture mark....and I'm back to image 0001, 0002, etc etc etc. Is there a custom naming/numbering option I may have missed to make my potential JPEG/RAW archiving a bit easier in the future?

This can't be done in-camera, either change the filenames when uploading the images to your computer (software is available to do this automatically) or store the images in dated folders (i.e. 08-08).

Thank You. I've been dating my folders for most of my D70's life so I guess I'm safer than I thought.....it would have been nice to customize the file names or numbers though.

I only have 2 P&S oldish Coolpixes in my collection, so have no idea how Nikon's DSLR file numbering works, but your query sounds very similar to what I had on my Canon 5D a few days ago. Thread here Downloader Pro is a very useful piece of software, and might do what you want.

A couple of points; Nikon cameras create a folder on your memory card numbered 100, after you have taken 9999 images the folder number changes to 101 and the image number reverts to 0001. This repeats every 9999 images and the folder number goes up each time.
If you use Nikon Transfer to copy your images to your computer you can have the program add additional characters to the name of each image. Nikon Transfer, like Nikon View NX is a free download.

I think I have Nikon Transfer already but never installed it. I have Nikon View...and love it.

Nikon Transfer and View are great - very fast and just the job for quick review!
I hit this problem with the "clock" a wee while ago! I'm now on 40K+ with my D70.
I edit the image file numbers to add a digit for the tens of thousands.
In Adobe Bridge, you can slice off the "DSC_", add the digit, then reappend the four figure rest of the file name.
