I don't know if anyone here has the answer but I thought I'd ask before I started researching the 'Net!
I've been very fortunate in that, overriding the cautionary notes in the manual, the D40X body I bought works fine with the older MF lenses and I have now gathered a fair bunch of them:

I now really need to consider a 'backup' body in case the one I have goes on the blink but, before I buy another D40X (sometime in the near future), I am wondering if any (or even all?) other current Nikon DSLR bodies will also accept and work (manual everything) with these older, AI and pre-AI MF lenses?
TIA

All Nikon DSLRs will accept AI (or AI-modified) lenses (the D200 upwards will also meter light, allowing usage in A and M modes), the D40 and D60 (in addition to the D40x) will also accept pre-AI lenses (no metering though).

I would suggest a D1x, good solid camera let down by poor batteries (they were good at the time but technology moves on). However any of the later bodies should actually do all you want, as long as it isn't metering. The D200, D300, D700, D1, D2 and D3 I know meter with just about any lens but not sure about the rest.

How about a D2x - a great camera even if it has been somewhat eclipsed by the D3 - and now available at bargain prices.

This is true for most, but not necessarily all. I once had an AI-converted 55mm/1.2 lens, which would definitely not go on (from memory this, as it was a test fitting in a store) an F90 or F100 film body - the front of the prism prohibited it. Whether that would be the case with any of Nikon's DSLRs past or present I wouldn't know, but proceed with caution.

Many AI modified lenses retain the "Rabbit ears" for compatibility with earlier cameras. If you don't have a pre-AI body you can remove the "Ears" and increase the clearance between the lens and the prism housing.
There is a modification available for the D1 and F5 that fits a different coupling ring around the lens throat. This new ring has a hinged coupling to permit the use of pre-AI lenses without the risk of damage. I don't know if this modification is still available or if it is/was available for the D2, D3, or the F6, or any other camera for that matter. This coupling ring is standard on the F4.

Interesting. I've got a pre-AI 1.2/55mm with rabbit ears and it goes on the D40X without any problem and is actually on it even as I type!!
Thanks again for all the info!!

Now here's a weird thing... Both my Canon DSLRs have a groove just under the prism housing. As far as I can see it has no obvious purpose as far as Canon lenses go (though it may be connected with something inside the camera) but it, oh so!, conveniently fits the rabbit ears on my Nikkors and allows the aperture ring to turn without fouling.............

I'll avoid the obvious riposte that it's because Canon wish you to be able to fit decent lenses. This being difficult as I've still to make up my mind where to "invest".

I had a good number of AIS lenses that I used with my F3 and also used on my D100 and later D200. I AlWAYS found that with AIS lenses I always got at least 1-2 stops under exposure. I commented upon it on this forum and others found the same. They will work but the exposure compensation will have to be altered to suit.

Not a problem, I'm setting the exposures manually - the instant review luxury enables quick and easy adjustments and makes it a doddle!
(The worst thing with MF is, once in a while, you find yourself waiting for a brief moment like when the door at the petrol station isn't automatic and you feel a bit of a tit when you find yourself just standing there - albeit for only a second or two! )
