nikon fm2 or f2
      #695298 - 24/08/2008 11:47

I am looking at buying a second hand nikon for my friend who is getting married, i know he likes the old style cameras, this is where i get a bit lost as i only know about digital format. I want to get him classic nikon and i remember him telling me about a nikon that he wanted, he mentioned something about it being the camera of choice of war photojournalists because of its tough manufacture, i think it was the fm2 or f2 but not sure which, if someone could throw a bit of light on the subject it would be much appreciated.

The F2 is much older than the FM2 which was delightfully compact and one of the last all mechanical film bodies. My first choice, if I still did film, would be an FM3a in chrome with a 50mm f1.4 AIS lens and an MD-12 motor wind.

I love my FM2!

However, the F2, being a pro spec model, sounds more likely to be the one you friend is thinking of.

There's a good article on the history of the F2 here (and many other Nikon film cameras on that site).

I never had an FM (in any variety), although I did once own an FE2 and played with the FM3a in Grays (that'll set Mark off on one, haha! ). For my money the F2 is a far nicer piece of kit.

On the other hand, it could be your friend is referring to the original Nikon F, which was indeed one of the cameras of choice in Vietnam (along with Leicas in M3 and M2 flavours).

How about a Nikkormat? Or am I swearing?(I'm sure certain war photogs used them)

Can't say I've heard that Larry. It wouldn't surprise me though, as the Nikkormat is as tough as they come.

I'm sure there was an article in AP a couple of years ago about a well known war photog. who used Nikkormats. I know his name but cant think of it! Gonna bug me now!

Morning Larry. A look through my clippings files (up to the end of 2007) turned up nothing. That's not to say it doesn't exist of course, but I don't have it if it does.

Hi Tim,did you happen to find a' classics to use' feature on the Nikkormat cameras? I think I read it in there but i may be confusing the war photographer article from elsewhere. I definitely remember reading about the cameras in AP tho.

Ah, I keep those in a separate binder from features on togs (or did, up to the slash down to two pages - I stopped bothering when that happened). There's definitely a Nikkormat article, so will check it out later.

How's things with you & yours?

Oh no, I only keep them for one year - then go through that year's copies at beginning of January, and clip what I want. That has regrettably declined over the last 18 months or so. Whether that's a reflection on me, or the mag, or both, is anybody's opinion!

Sadly, nothing in Ivor's "Classics to use" article on the Nikkormat.
