I set the dial to Lv on the left, I set the handheld mode in the camera menu. I press the shutter fully, then I compose and press the shutter again. I hear the mirror cycle. Then I press the play button, but cannot see my photo anywhere.

When you're in live view and press the play button, you can't directly access your photos, at least on the D300 and D700.
You have to disable live view to get to your pics - it can be done by pressing menu, which lowers the mirror, and then pressing play.
Alternatively, if you've not already got this, you could set the D3 to review each image once it's taken. Even in live view, it'll review the shot without having to struggle with the menu/play combo.

i move out of live view, and press the menu button but the photo is gone. would like to know if my D3 is toast. going to hong kong soon. would you recommend taking it to a service centre for them to explore all the modes and settings to test for problems? i can see live view though, so somthing is amiss.

I suspect that no photo has been recorded...
1st press flicks the mirror up, so that the live view appears on the rear screen
2nd press focuses the image
3rd press fires the shutter
I suspect you are missing this third press of the shutter. If you don't do this, no image is recorded, even though you might think it has!

it's working now. not sure what i was doing wrong before. i notice that 3D tracking 51 point af will not work in Lv. Users need to choose the cross hair, is that right?
