Towards the end of May I bought a Nikon D80. I have been very please with it so far. However, I have recently discovered what appears to be a fault: When in normal shooting mode the buttons on the back of the camera for White Balance, ISO and Quality do not function. I can still access these functions via the Menu. These three buttons work as expected when used for Help, Thumbnail, and Zoom. This indicates there is no mechanical or electrical problem with them. I restored all settings back to default by using both the two button re-set and re-set function the custom settings menu. The battery is fully charged. I have also pressed the re-set button adjacent to the USB connection. All to no avail. Everything else is working perfectly. If anybody knows how to get these buttons working again I would be most grateful. Thank you.

Whilst in shooting mode, are you just pressing these buttons or are you holding them pressed whilst rotating the command dial?

In the early days of owning a D300 I found that after taking a shot I found that I couldn't change the focus point with the selector. Then it dawned on me. After taking a shot I had got the camera set to display the image on the back screen and the selector was doing something else. Doh! How could I be so stupid not to anticipate that? Moral. RTFM, or even engage brain, before asking here. As for the D80 problem, I haven't a clue since I don't use one. but RTFM and engaging brain might just help.

Would you mind telling us what you mean by "Normal shooting mode" please?
For me "Normal" would be Aperture Priority but for you it might be Program, Shutter Priority or Manual. My mother's camera doesn't allow some controls to be used when in Program mode. She has to use Aperture Priority to get the settings she wants. I have no experience of the D80 but it is possible that some functions are inhibited in modes where they are inappropriate. As an example, if you are in Shutter Priority mode you can't adjust the aperture because in Shutter Priority you give control of the aperture to the camera.

Just checked my D80 and in Program mode , the White balance does not function but the other two do.The only way I seem able to get all three not to work is when the menu is displayed Don

May I suggest a reading of the manual? Pages 58 to 60 cover white balance.

Problem sorted! I contacted Grays of Westminster and as I described the problem suddenly my brain came to life - I was looking at the rear screen instead of looking at the top info panel! I feel a complete pratt. Some sort of "senior moment". Thanks for your interest. Must remember to engage brain first.

Don't worry about it. It isn't the first sign of senility. We've all done it. Just describing a problem in detail to someone else (even if they have no idea of what you are talking about) is all it takes for the 'enlightened moment'.

I had one last week. Whilst ona WebEx web conference I notcied that the battery indicator was showing that the power level had dropped to almost nothing. This puzzled me as I was connected to the mains power supply but not wanting to drop out of the web conference I checked that the socket witch was on, the plur was in correctly and all the cable connections too. All was fine but still the battery indicator showed no external power supply. Fearing something was worng with my laptop it suddenly dawned on me that my colleague was sharing his desktop, I was on full screen mode and the offending battery indicator was in fact his.
