Done the deed! Bought a brand new full frame Nikon
      #689968 - 11/08/2008 23:21

How could I resist?

Chap got the outfit as a present in 1981 and never used it!

I asked him if the battery compartment was corroded and he replied "as new" "never put a battery in!"

The film though expired some time in 1986 - shame!

Paul

The main problem is - dare I use it?

A bargain is only a bargain if you can use it. Would be a waste not to. Enjoy....put a film through it, and tell us your verdict. hope the price was right. [me, i'm wanting someone to offer myself , a similar " bargain ". rollie, hassleblad or any other Quality equipment. But this will only happen in my dreams]
P.S. What's the lens?

Not exactly a bargain! More a unique find.

It is fitted with an "E" Series Zoom - not one I would have chosen, but I do have a series of nice primes that will fit.
Come to that I have never had (or wanted) a motor drive before.

I already have three FE2s, so I think it is time for a cull, as I find I rarely use them these days. However as the camera I have spent the last twenty or so years with, I thought it would be nice to have a perfect example to bequeath my son.

I agree in principle it's there to be used, but you might check with Gray's of Westminster what the value would be to see how it compares with what you paid. Given the condition, they will probably start foaming at the mouth with excitement.

Not really an option Mark.

This was one of those "I'll pay what is necessary to win it" bids. There were a lot of bidders! As I said, not a bargain, more a unique opportunity.

I have only done that once before - in 1979 I saw a Retina 111C in an unused condition in a camera shop in Waterloo station. They wanted treble the current market price and in the end, because they had for nearly a year, they did a deal.

Normally I never give more than market value and I just walk away, but this was too good to be true.

However, I have decide that in future there will be no more purchases of "collectors" cameras made after 1970. My collection is in danger of turning into a random one and I think I must specialise more. So this will now be my sole Nikon (bar the D300s of course) and I think my five other Nikons from the 1980s will soon be on that auction site.

There are two other reasons - I fancy buying a "collectors car" of some sort and releasing a bit of cash might help. However the main driver is a threat hanging over my head that if many more little parcels arrive, I will be moved into the garage with them! When you have to rush out and meet the postman and hide parcels in the boot of your car, the point of no return has been reached!

I never understood why people became addicted to drink, drugs & gambling. I do now!

Period of "Cold Turkey" (I think that is the correct technical term!) now begins!

If you want some more VR1000 I've three rolls in the freezer. I shot one last month and the grain is hilarious!

Having been idle for 27 years, are the light seals perished?
I would think there`d be deterioration by now.You don`t often see something completely unused.
Cheers Dave

The light seals may well be perished and the lubricant solidified, but, but if it is unused then the mechanics will not be worn. A service by Nikon will give a perfect example. Personally I prefer an FMn2 from that family and I've still got one and occasionally use it when I want to demonstrate the wet process from portrait to print in two hours.
