Hi I am looking to buy a digital DSLR camera and have narrowered my choice down to;
Nikon D60 or D80 or Cannon EOS450D
In essence it appears that the D60 requires both VR and AF features in the leneses, whereas AF is bulit into the D80 and Cannon not sure about the latter. Does the D80 need VR lenses ?
It appears you can get D60 package for c.£520 which incorprates camera and 18-55 and 55-200 VR lenses.
Anyone got advice on what is best

All Canon autofocus is lens based, Canon changed their mount when they brought autofocus cameras to the market, so were able to start with a clean sheet designwise. The Nikon D60 can only autofocus with lenses containing built in motors, which excludes all Nikon AF and AFD lenses, the D80 has a focus motor incorporated into the body which can autofocus with these lenses. Your choice may depend on what equipment you already own.
If you are starting fresh it would be advisable to visit a good retailer and look at the possible choices. When you handle a camera you may find there is a clear winner. My advice would also be to purchase from a retailer that is prepared to help and demonstrate cameras to you, rather than buying a box from an internet supplier.
The D80 does not need VR lenses, these allow a lower shutter speed to be used than could normally be successfully hand held. The D60 does not need VR lenses either, but you may, it depends on the type of photography you intend to use the equipment for.

Instead of getting the 18-55mm and 55-200mm VR, why not get the 18-200mm VR and do away with changing lenses?

I do love these suggestions to buy a dSLR and then get one superzoom lens to save changing lenses ! Kind of defeats the point

You will be surprised to find that generally lenses with shorter zoom ranges produce better results. Not to say that the 18-200VR is a bad lens, but shorter zooms have less distortion for starters. Many think that way when they are starting out (when I started out, I thought too that bigger zoom lenses particularly with teleconverters were all the rage ), but there are trade-offs with lenses which are jacks of all trades.

Get a D80...you won't regret it, I had a D80 before buying the D300. The D80 is great and very user-friendly!
