NX vs Apple Aperture 2
      #664075 - 06/06/2008 22:27

Have NX and to be honest struggle a little with it and the hints given in AP which always relate to Adobe's all powerful PS. Downloaded free 30 trial of Aperture (apologies but Macs only) and seems bit more intuitive and little bit like Lightroom.

Wondering if anyone else had done the same for NEF conversion / editing and what their opinions are and if they had actually switched.

Cheers

Hi,
I switched from Capture 4 to Aperture 1.1 about 3 years ago. I have tried NX as I got a free copy of it with my D3. There's NO WAY I would stop using Aperture 2.1. The conversions are excellent and the image tagging/integration/archiving etc is brilliant.
NX is clunky and does not file and sort. Aperture now has the NX control point technology available as a plug in - I might try it if there is a free trial, as it is the only bit missing...
Photoshop.... what's that? (I have CS3, but only use it for a bit of cloning on a very rare image)
Aperture is worth buying a Mac for

Thanks for this; especially the NIX Control point plug in.

The main advantage for NX is that it carries over your camera settings, in addition to WB settings, so if you open a NEF file in NX and save it as a JPEG, you will have what you would have got if you had shot a JPEG in camera (except that you can edit all the parameters in NX)

With all other RAW converters (as I understand it) the image adjustments are all a set of defaults, and none of the camera settings are used (except white balance)

If you're happy to recreate every image from scratch then that's fine, but for me, carrying over the camera settings makes NX the obvious choice for a Nikon user.

Actually the 'default' settings in Aperture are fine. The only thing you might want to carry over is D-lighting, but the Aperture settins for shadow adjustment are good.

Carrying on, I've just been using the Viveza (Nik software U-point plugin for Aperture) trial. I'm blown away. For example you can select a face that's a bit in shadow, lighten, increase saturation and warmth for 'just' the face. Or put the point on an annoying object and just 'darken' it away. No masks etc..... U points automatically select 'similar' pixels in a given radius. Photoshop is now officially dead in the water.......

Hi

Would you mind clearing up an Aperure misunderstanding please?

I nipped to my local Apple shop twice in the last month to chat to them.

I have a D300 and shoot NEF

I have had enough of MS and was about to 'go Mac'

The prob is they couldnt get the NEF files I took on a flash drive to work with iPhoto or Aperture
They are allegedly not supported
The copy of Photoshop they had in the shop was fine

Half of the reason to buy a Mac is for Aperture
If it wont work with my D300 NEF's there seems little point

Im confused

The Aperture website says it should but in the shop it wouldnt

The guys advised me to try Google as they decided it wasnt compatable which I though a bit poor

So:

Does Aperture work with D300 NEF's?
I ask as it seems to wrk with other NEF's as described above

Cheers

Poor knowledge indeed.......
Here is the list of supported digital cameras from the Apple website:

http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/raw.html

It includes the D3 and D300, but you need at least the one before latest update to OSX (10.4.10 or 10.5.2) and Aperture 2.1.

Nikon conversions in Aperture are very good.

I was also going to suggest to continue using both. I use Aperture or more usually Lightroom for the bulk of processing but Capture when I need something a bit more specific done. Interested in the Viveza plug in mentioned, anyone care to expand on that one?

Yes control points are great, aren't they? Nikon Capture has been capable of this from day one!

... and what's more, the full blown NX is cheaper than the Viveza plugin. I have to say I use NX for almost all my work and only resort to CS2 for cloning. NX2 is now out and is much faster with a well set up PC.

Thanks, been on hols so out of touch and missed NX2 coming out. Must say surprised that your Apple shop couldn't get Aperture 2.1 to open D300 NEF files.
