Introduction To Nikon Owners Anonymous
      #646322 - 22/04/2008 15:16

Hello There.

My name is 'Fen' and I'm about to be a Nikon owner.

I've been talking to a few of the AP Forums, Venerable Nikon Sages about various bits of kit and now I think I'm about ready to make my purchases.

This is what I've narrowed it down to so far...

NIKON D3
NIKON 14-24mm F2.8 G AFS ED
SIGMA 105mm f2.8 EX NAF DG Macro
NIKON SB800 Speedlite
NIKON EN-EL4 Battery

Just got to decide on a long zoom!

What are people opinions on the following?

NIKON 80-200mm F2.8D IF-ED AF NIKKOR

NIKON 70-300mm F4-5.6G AF-S VR IF-ED

SIGMA 50-500mm F4-6.3 EX NAF HSM DG (the BIGMA)

I've had a play with the BIGMA attached to a D3 and although it was heavy, it wasn't as heavy as I feared.

Thankyou for your time. Where do I get one of those nice cardigans from?

Fen, I know it's not one you've listed, but if you're looking for a telephoto zoom then you have to seriously consider the 70-200 f/2.8 AF-S VR. Yes it's about £1100 but it is sublime. I've tried it both on my D300 and a D3 and it's unbelievable, as quiet and sharp as a ninja hedeghog. Let me see if I can email you a test shot I did with one. It blew me away.

"NIKON 14-24mm F2.8 G AFS ED"

Golly. I'm a bit jealous of that. I'll have to console myself with the extra 2mm my Sigma 12-24 has, but f2.8 is damn tempting.

Thanks for the welcome.

I had a look at the 70-200 f/2.8 AF-S VR. But I'd ave to drop something else out of my list as it'd exceed my budget.

If you need the quality then great, but if you don't, then do you really want to carry this kit? I very nearly bought a D3 and 24-70. (I already own and use a 105macro VR). I thought that the cost was a bit much but acceptable, the portability of this without a porter is just too much.

One camera body, three lenses, a flash, and a spare battery - it's hardly an extravagantly large kit, even if you do carry it all at the same time, which obviously isn't necessarily the intention. I frequently carry a lot more than that, and Fen's younger and a good deal fitter than I am! Somehow I think he'll cope.

You ought to see what I carry around with me now when I go out for a wander

But most of the time, I tend just to take the gear that I need for the day rather than all of it.

Fen,

I think it depends on what you plan to do with the Kit Pam has an f2.8 80-200mm ED Lens and it is absolutly fantastic, but it is a big boy and needs either a steady hand or a tripod. I have the 70-300mm VR lens and for Wildlife /bird photography it is fantastic as it is small and light weight and thew VR means it remains sharp when panning. On the D300 you get the 1.5 multiplier which again is great.

So you really do need to think what you want the lens for as you do not have the multiplier on the D3 but can shoot at high ISO's yo need top think about what provides the best flexibility for you needs. I also looked at the 80-400 VR lens but this is a lot heavier and more expensive than the 70-300mm VR.

Hope this helps and welcome to the club.
